Renegade:
The leaves were taking their sweet time coming down, although some of the less dedicated ones had already carpeted the forgotten trails he liked to use. Branches scraped at his legs, already bare from the cold and trampling of other creatures on the trail. The day had warmed up to a glorious Indian Summer temperature, but it wouldn't stay for long. With a cub on his heels he expected to be detained, and with the sun setting earlier as the season changed, he couldn't risk being caught in the forest after dark, not with the frost growing hard.
He almost missed her question. He normally didn't have a companion to talk to on his long walks. Well, he was going to have to get used to speaking more often, with this little catter-box he was sure he was going to be listening a lot more too.
"We're headed North. Sapling Grove Territory is up there, a pack was formed up that way this past Spring. We might skirt the territory for a couple of days, maybe even go in, it depends. I haven't met the alphas yet, I'm not sure if they would mind us being there." as long as he was talking, he may as well start lesson number one. "Winter brings snow. It fills the valley and makes it more difficult to walk. I usually spend it in the highlands where it's not as deep and it's easier to get around. Game is scarcer up there because the willow groves the elk and other game like grow down in the valley, but it's worth being out of the snow. It leaves tracks, and covers trails and can be very dangerous if you don't check your bearings or hide your marks."
He glanced over his shoulder again as his ears caught the slip-sliding sound of paws on leaves. "Watch your footing, the leaves sometimes hide dangers too. Ravines, un-earthed roots, you always have to be alert for enemies, prey, and Nature's blessings and banes."
