Scorpius arrived near the den. The place where he left his family. He had four now, it seemed. One with his mother father and brothers. Another with Mysti and whether he liked it or not-Striken. He had another family here with Echo and his two pups. He sucked in a deep breath and hid behind a pungent witch-hazel bush. It's scent would mask his own, and it was shrouded with shadows to hide his pelt.

Scorpius' dark blue eyes glowed only slightly in the daylight. He saw Echo. She was even more strong and perfect than before. It had been so long since he'd seen her. He almost felt like revealing himself and making up an excuse for his disappearance. But he knew that he couldn't. He had to come and take what he came for, then leave as quickly as possible. What would a pup be attracted to that he could take him? A butterfly, he didnt face a butterfly on hand. A rock rolling across the ground, boring. He should've thought this through more.

Echo

She smiled at her pups. They were growing up so fast. Volka was pretty speedy using his longer legs to overtake his younger sister, Ursa. Echo laughed from the bottom of her heart. "Okay my energetic little pups, it's about time for your nap." She turned to the den and went to enter. A frown formed. The leaves were crushed and starting to decay. It was about time they changed the bedding. Echo looked back at her pups. Ursa was walking back. She didn't want to disturb the pup. Her eyes looked down at the pup bouncing by her feet. Perfect. 

Echo crouched he'd down in front of Volka. He wouldn't want to go and collect bedding. That would be boring. She had to spice it up a little. Echo smiled and added a hint of mystery to her voice. "Now, how would my big strong man like to go on a mission?" She paused to let Volka get excited about the mission. "I need you to do something that only you can do. You must collect only the finest bedding for our castle so that our nap with be guarded against the fiercest of creatures. You will travel far and wide along this clearing and in my sight to gather the materials we require. Will you accept your mission?" Knowing he would say yes, she shouted in an authoritative voice, "Then be off brave hero!" She watched as he bound away and smiled. He was such a good boy.

Volka

The small pup looked up at his mom. His eyes widened at the prospect of a quest. She had chosen him to fulfill this mission. He must not fail! Volka puffed out his chest. "Yes ma'am!" He turned and scoured the tree line. His tail whipped back and forth. This was a very important mission that Mommy had given him. Volka finally spotted a nearby tree. On the tree there was a plush green substance. Moss! He jumped up and darted to the tree. His head inspected the growing moss to find a way to peel it from the bark. He decided to try and tear it away. Volka used his claws to try and scrape it off, but he only seemed to shred it. He frowned. Then he tried his teeth. The moss tasted funny and Volka just spat it out. He shook his head in disgust. Volka sat and observed the moss, trying to think of a way to dislodge the green foliage.

Scorpius nearly jumped out of his skin as his target rushed sat his bush and attacked the tree next to him. He took deep silent breaths to calm himself. Just like it was Volkas (he heard the very curious name) mission to collect bedding, it was his mission to collect Volka. It was a shame that he would never report back to his commander. Scorpius felt a pang in his heart. His very soft one. He was suposed at how fast transformation could take place. He remembered his plan to take the pup. He knew of a pressure poin right between the shoulder blades at the base if the neck that would k ock someone out. He learned that one straight from his brother Atlas. Now all he had to do was make his move. Scorpius readied his shoulders and lunged.

His large paw flew from the bush, half if his body shooting out with it. It snacked true, right on the pups pressure spot. He should be unconscious. Now he had to act fast.

Volka

He saw a flash of grey. Then a sharp pain hit his neck. A yelp broke out and he crumpled to the ground. I failed Mommy... Everything went black.

Echo

Echo watched as Volka bounded to a nearby tree. Moss covered the trunk in a green fluffy way. She smiled. He had made a good choice. Echo turned her head away from the male to look at Ursa. She waited for her to get close, motherly instincts telling her to make sure she didn't trip and hurt herself. Echo couldn't imagine what she would do if one of her pups got hurt or went missing. Good thing I don't have to worry about that. She relaxed a little and smiled. That was when she noticed that Volka still hadn't come back. She knew he would have difficulties getting the moss off the tree, but it shouldn't take him that long. Echo looked over to the tree and nearly fainted. Volka wasn't there. Echo screamed.

Ursa:

"Mommy? What's wrong? Where's Volka?" questions poured out softly between Ursamine's timid lips. Once second he was there, the next he had disappeared. Maybe he had gone to look for better moss? No, he would never disobey momma. It was part if his mission to stay in sight. He would never desert his duty. Worry filled her chest like Kai Lake was living inside her.

Scorpius:

As the pup became limp he gently pulled the small form into the shrub. He made sure that Volka was still alive and well. He made sure that no thorns scratched him as he lifted him by the scruff of his neck. Scorpius raised his huge body from behind the bush, shot Echo an apologetic look. -he halfway hoped she saw him- and dashed away, careful to support Volka's frame.

Echo

She looked frantically into the forest where Volka had been, but stayed by the den. Volka may have disappeared, but she couldn't dissert Ursa. Echo strained her eyes to look through the leaves. In her distress she could have sworn that she saw two dark blue eyes looking at her through the trees. Was that... Echo couldn't even think his name. Did he take Volka? Not only did he break my heart, he took my baby. Volka and Ursa are what saved me from despair after he left me. Now... She choked out a wail. He took my baby! Echo fell to the ground. A flood of tears fell down her face. Incoherent cries echoed through her heart, mind, and voice as she mourned the loss of her beloved son. He took my baby! Her mind screamed the same line over and over. Her vision blurred as tears clouded her vision and she squinted her eyes closed in her exclamations. This proceeded for what seemed like a lifetime. Echo's heart felt like it might bleed through her pelt. She wanted to roll over and die, but in her dramatics, Echo spotted the small pup sitting next to her. Her cries subsided and her tears slowed. A hiccup shook her and Echo pulled Ursa to her. Her tight throat made it difficult to speak, but she was able to croak out a single line. "Don't ever leave me Ursa. Never." She squeezed the small pup and hoped she understood the weight those words held for her.

Ursa could feel Kai Lake over flowing as she too began sobbing. She didnt fully know why. All she knew was that her best friend, brother, protector had gone and might not be coming back. Tears exploded from her deep blue eyes and Ursamine nestled into her mothers pitch black fur. "I will never leave you, not even when your an elder!" Shae choked through her promise before wailing along with her mother. She did not yet understand her emotions, but she knew she would never leave her mother.
