Pawing at the Pebbles ((Open))

Calypso gazed into the rushing water of the creek. Flashes of silver, and grey hues told her that fish were jetting through the shallows. She dipped a pale blue paw into the warm water. Her pads found several smooth pebbles. She continued swishing the stones around. A warm summer breeze ruffled her fur. The wind held no scent of interest. Calypso sighed and let her body go limp. Her paw was gently swaying under the blue surface of the stream.

Nanook approached a she-wolf that seemed to be asleep and as she padded towards her she tried to be quiet so as not to wake her. She positioned herself nearby to fish, liking the company of other wolves, even if she was asleep. She struck her paw out and hit something soft. Quickly she dug her claws in and took it out of the water, only then did she realize her mistake. Her 'fish' was actually the other she-wolf's paw. "Oh! Sorry." She said sheepishly.

Calypso grimaced as her paw was punctured. She looked up in surprise and shock. "Ow." She said softly and tucked her throbbing paw under her. "Quite the aim you have there."

Nanook flinched as the she-wolf spoke, hearing a scolding. She blushed, "I wasn't aiming for your paw, I was fishing." What else would she be doing, sitting beside a beautiful creek that obviously had plenty of fish?

"It's really alright." Calypso nosed the water and lapped some up, eyes never straying from the female. She wasn't sure what to think of her.

The light blue pointed wolf lapped up some water and Nanook relaxed a little. She couldn't help but notice though that the wolf's eyes never strayed from her. Perhaps she had a brother like Star, she thought, and she wanted to ease her fears a little. "Don't worry, I won't hurt you, unless you attack me." She said soothingly, and then added, "I'm a good wolf."

Calypso's lime eyes gleaned with amusement. "Of course, what good wolf wouldn't?" She curled up tighter and laid her tail over her nose. She even went cross-eyed when she began to examine the blue curved triangles on her tail.

Nanook turned back to the creek and set about trying to catch a fish. This time she wouldn't make a fool out of herself. Sticking a paw in she relaxed it. When the next fish came by she dug her claws into it and flipped it onto land. Once on land it kept thrashing and Nanook jumped back, scared and puzzled. Star had told her they died when they were on land. "What-What's happening?" She asked appealing to the other.

Calypso chuckled at the young wolfs exploits. "It's still alive. But it will die eventually without water. Though you could just kill it now..." The pale blue she wolf chuckled again and stretched out like a sunning cat.

Nanook felt comforted by the older's laugh. Star used to laugh like that when she did something wrong as well. "O-okay." She stammered nervously. She slammed a paw down on the still thrashing fish. Taking a bite she looked up and invited the wolf to join her. Smiling she commented, "My brother used to laugh when I did something wrong too."

"Atta girl." Calpso stood at her invitation. "Oh, I'm sure he was a nice fellow." The pale wolf yipped nervously. Calypso let her long tail away behind her as she leaped across the stream to join her new friend. She took a small bite of the red meat. It was rather good.

Nanook waited until the other had taken a bite of the meat and took another bite herself before answering. “He was. Now though...” She trailed off, distressed by the memory of Star’s flashing teeth as he tried to kill her. “He’s different.” She hoped Calpso wouldn't ask or if she did, wouldn't blame her.

Oh...he's still alive? Calypso wanted to ask but thought better of it as an awkward silence hung over them. She took another bite. They traded bites, and before long the fish was just a pile if bones and fins.
