Jaida’s paws softly crackled on the twig-littered forest floor as she trotted triumphantly with head held high, a rabbit swinging from her small jaws. Her bushy tail flicked out behind her, her sleek reddish-brown summer coat glossy in the sun. She noticed the terrain was becoming steeper, sloping downwards into a basin, and began to nimbly descend down the incline. She placed a paw on a loose clod of earth and her foot slipped out from under her as the dirt gave way under her weight. She let out a muffled yelp, realizing too late what had happened, and started to tumble down the hill. Jaida’s claws scrabbled helplessly on the loose, slippery topsoil of the hill as she tried to gain traction, but it was to no avail. She ended up in a heap at the foot of the incline, face first in some muddy water. “Ghhuh…” She groaned into the ground then shakily pushed herself to her paws, a frustrated growl ripping from her throat. How could she be so clumsy? Jaida winced a little after putting weight on her front left leg then gingerly set herself down in the mud. Her fur was basically covered in the stuff, especially on her left side; that was where she had mostly landed. Looking back up the slope, she realized that it wasn’t incredibly steep, but it would be exceedingly difficult to climb up as it was so slippery. She had let go of the rabbit early, and it was a little way up the incline, just out of reach. “Are you kidding me?” She yelled angrily, standing up again, trying to ignore the shooting pain in her leg; it was probably just a sprain, but it still hurt. It’s bloody summer, why is there so much mud everywhere, anyway? Jai thought with bitter frustration, glaring up at the rabbit that, mere minutes ago, was right in her jaws.

Noki:
Noki's stomach ached with hunger as she wandered aimlessly. She didn't have a home or a family to go to. She'd recently woken up alone in a cold den, retaining very blurry memories of a family who'd seemed to have just disappeared. Outside, Noki had found herself in a summer storm. With warm raindrops dripping onto her grey fur, Noki had enjoyed herself despite herself despite her predicament. But, now the storm was over and Noki had a miserably empty belly. Noki's sensitive nose caught of whiff of something delicious. Eagerly following the trail, Noki's delicate paws smushed down the muddy topsoil, leaving a clearly visible trail of small pawprints.
Noki paused as she noticed the incline of the terrain. Her paws began to loose their footing and slide down the slope. Frantically, Noki backpedaled up the hill to a less steep area. The pup peered down the slope, frustrated, as her red eyes found the dead rabbit that she'd been tracking. Then she saw a pile of mud move!
Eyes widening with terror, Noki resisted the urge to run. Maybe the mud monster was friendly... or maybe it used the rabbit to lure little pups into its waiting jaws, which were probably giant and filled with razor sharp teeth. Noki quivered with paralyzing fear, wishing she could just disappear, but under the mellow light of the after-storm sun, that was impossible. She noticed that the monster was wolven in form and had fur beneath all the mud. Maybe the mud monster wasn't a mud monster at all... Noki relaxed somewhat as she realized the true identity of the monster was much less threatening than she'd initially believed, though the wolf still could pose a threat. With her hunger driving her on, Noki hesitantly moved towards the rabbit again, searching for solid footholds. With carefully agile steps, she started making considerable progress towards the food.

After a few futile attempts to get back up to her rabbit, Jaida sat back down in the mud, a look of intense irritation plastered onto her face as she tried to figure out the easiest way to get out of this mud-pit. Suddenly, a small, dark grey figure appeared on the incline, starting to slip down a little bit but saving itself by scurrying back up before it fully lost its footing. Jaida’s features morphed into a look of surprise; what would a pup be doing out here alone? Its parents were probably somewhere nearby; Jai would have to keep a keen eye out for them. They’d probably be all worked up, worried about their ‘lost precious baby,’ and ready to take their anger out on an innocent Jaida. She scowled at that thought; she knew she was being unreasonable, but her frustration was getting the better of her.
Jai shook her head, suddenly realizing that the pup was now taking careful, calculated steps towards her rabbit. “Hey!” She barked suddenly, standing up again and shaking her fur, mud splattering out in all directions. “Hey, kid!” Jaida repeated, trying to keep the desperation out of her tone. “That’s my rabbit! Go scab off your own parents!” She said angrily, pacing back and forth restlessly while muttering and growling under her breath. Jaida wasn’t in the mood to be particularly charitable, letting some random, probably spoiled pup snack on her hard-earned meal while its parents were off gallivanting around somewhere else. She could do nothing to prevent this little scrap from taking her food; Jai was literally being stolen from by a tiny pup! She let out a groan- as if her situation wasn’t already ridiculous enough.

Noki:
The small pup was completely focused on the task at hand and retrieving that rabbit. She'd tried not to think about the wolf at the bottom of the slope whose intentions were still unknown. A splatter of mud splashed onto the side of Noki's cheek. She glanced up, fearfully. The wolf was now free of most of the mud, but her brown pelt was still filthy. The she-wolf glared up at Noki, her jaw moving with frustration. Noki was sure that wolf would tear the small pup to shreds the second she got her paws on Noki. Red eyes flicked to the rabbit. It was so close and it didn't seem that the wolf could climb reach it or Noki. The grey pup hesitated, considering her options.
After a second, she continued her calculated descent. She reached the food and sunk her soft fangs into the hind leg of the rabbit. Gnawing, she tried to break through the exterior of fur and skin with her tiny teeth. She tugged at the flesh, attempting to rip a piece away. The sharp tugs loosed the dig beneath the rabbit and it gave way. The rabbit slid down the hill, taking Noki with it as she vigorously worked against the mudslide to pull her prize further up the hill. Noki's minimal strength was nothing against the weight of gravity. Her back legs lost their footing and Noki fell onto her rump. She began to spin slightly as she slid. As her ride came to the end of its climax, Noki's felt her back thump against the legs of the she-wolf.
Noki looked upward, into the accusing eyes of the angry wolf. Still gripping the rabbit leg in her jaws, Noki made a run for it. She wasn't prepared for the weight of the rabbit, so she only made a couple paces before the resistance of the rabbit brought her flee to a sudden stop. A paw caught under the mud with the momentum and Noki tripped, faceplanting into the muck. Struggled to regain her footing, she slipped again and got another face full of mud before she stood. Frantic, Noki tugged at the rabbit. It budged a couple inches. She gave up and dropped the leg to flee. She run straight up the slope. She made it up less than a foot before the slippery mud brought her back to the bottom. Noki tried a several more times, her panic apparent, before she collapsed, shivering, terrified, as she was filled with a feeling of doom. Surely the angry wolf would devour her now and there was no way to escape. She was trapped.

Jaida stopped pacing, releasing a short grunt due to her injured paw. She watched the pup as it paused, glancing down at her with fearful large red eyes. It seemed to consider her words for a moment, pausing on the muddy slope, then after a moment’s hesitation continued towards on it's way towards the rabbit. “Little bugger!” Jai muttered under her breath, looking up gloomily as it began to gnaw at the rabbit, jerking it around. It couldn’t seem to carry the full thing in its little jaws, and seemed to be trying to rip a chunk off. Just watching the whole show made Jaida a little anxious, despite her irritation; the pup was in an incredibly precarious position. It could get hurt— Jaida wasn’t surprised when the rabbit gave way in a sudden mudslide, dragging the pup down with it. It fell against Jai’s forelegs with a thud, making her wince as it knocked into her hurt paw. She looked down at it, raising an eyebrow as it glanced up at her and suddenly scrambled away in apparent terror, rabbit still swinging from its small jaws.
Jaida made no attempt to follow it, instead watching as it dropped the rabbit in its attempts to flee, face-planting in the mud and making a few panicked attempts to scramble of the mud-pit; she doubted it could get up anyway. She felt a little twinge of shame; the poor little thing was absolutely terrified. “Hey, hey, kid, calm down…” Suddenly it collapsed in a shivering heap. “Trust me, that doesn’t work as well as you think it does…” Jai said, referring to the pup’s attempts to scramble out of the mud. She felt guilty for causing the pup so much fear; she knew she shouldn’t take out her exasperation on a pup. Jaida shifted on her fore-paws uncomfortably. Man, she should probably do something instead of just letting it curl up and shiver to death. “Listen. I promise I’m not gonna eat you.” She said firmly, approaching the pup cautiously with a subtle limp, trying not to set it off again. Wow, Jaida, you’re so incredibly reassuring, she congratulated herself in her mind, sighing softly. “Look, you can have some of the rabbit if you really want it.” She tried to reconcile, sitting down in what she hoped was an nonthreatening manner. Jai shook her head, analyzing what she’d previously said… had she been too hard on the little pup? “Your parents are nearby, right? I’ll help you find them, OK?” She said in a slightly gentler tone, not really thinking it through in a rush to blurt out potentially comforting things; maybe she was a little annoyed about her whole situation, but Jai still hated to feel like the bad guy... But how could she promise to deliver this pup back to its parents, when Jaida couldn’t even figure out how to get out of this dumb mud pit?

Noki:
Suspense. Noki hated suspense. She knew her impending death was about to strike, but the wait seemed nearly as murderous as the angry she-wolf about to gobble Noki up. Nothing happened for a couple seconds which seemed like an eternity to the pup. Curiosity and apprehension burning inside her, Noki peeked behind her. The wolf was approaching. Her jaw was moving again, probably stretching in preparation of the delicious feast that Noki would be. Noki wanted to shut her eyes and curl deeper into the darkness, but she'd frozen in renewed terror at the sight of the creature that she was sure would deliver her doom. Her red eyes were fixed on the reddish brown she-wolf, unable to look away.
Just as Noki was sure that the wolf would dart forward and end the suspense, she sat. Confused, Noki studied the she-wolf with alert, studious eyes. She no longer looked furious, more pitying and somewhat uncomfortable. Her jaw still moved, the frightening fangs gleaming as they caught the light. Maybe the she-wolf was reconsidering the action of eating Noki.
Noki decided to try and help the decision along. Slowly, she turned the rest of her body to face the wolf while her eyes still watched the adult. She took a few paces backward until she nearly slipped again. Noki lowered her body, her belly fur brushing the muddy earth. Her tail tucked tightly between her legs. Her large ears flopped awkwardly as Noki attempted to flatten them against her skull. Her maw opened slightly to show her white teeth in a sort of fearful, yet guilty smile. Instinct told Noki to summon the vibration of an apologetic growl to her throat to add to her effort. Overall, Noki's body language said 'I'm sorry, just please don't eat me!'

Jaida watched as the cowering pup slowly turned to face her; instead of responding to her offers, it backed away and lowered itself into a position of complete submission, releasing an apologetic rumble. It had a bit of a guilty smile plastered on its little maw. Cheeky bugger, Jaida thought, though she couldn’t really stay mad at the pup. It still hadn’t spoken a word to Jaida, which was a little surprising, considering she’d made such an enticing offer; hadn’t it come for the rabbit in the first place? Maybe it was still a little too fearful to talk, but something told Jaida that it wasn’t entirely the case. It was odd; the little gray pup appeared to be alert, albeit a little freaked out still. It looked at her when she talked, but didn’t seem to fully comprehend what she was saying. Did she simply not know how to talk? Maybe; but she seemed old enough to have started to communicate with others. Could she be deaf? That could explain why she hadn’t listened to Jaida’s words, and was so completely terrified when it fell down. Also, maybe that could explain the missing parents; Jaida still hadn’t picked up any sign of them nearby. Maybe this pup wasn’t considered strong enough for them to keep, because it had some sort of speech or hearing issue; the thought made Jaida feel a little angry. Jai furrowed her brow while mulling it all over and then suddenly remembered herself. Whatever was wrong with it, the pup seemed to be relying on body language than anything; she shouldn’t send out confusing signals. She tried to relax her body language to put the pup more at ease.
She tried to think of a way to communicate effectively with this little pup. Jai ripped a sizeable chunk off the rabbit and nudged it towards her. It was probably the most comforting gesture she could put forward at the moment, and besides, they were probably going to be in there for a while unless they could get help from the outside. “Y’know, kid, it’d be really helpful if your parents decided to show up now…” She muttered, mostly to herself, while glancing back up the slope. She wasn’t even kidding at this point; she would rather deal with the wrath of concerned parents than to sit in this mud-bank for much longer. It was getting cold. Jaida looked at her own section of rabbit, all muddy after it’s descent into the dip and hasty abandonment. Well, at least she’d got it back, right? She snorted, not even sure if she wanted it anymore; she was just anxious to get out of this muddy prison. Resolving that she’d need the energy if she was to have any hope of getting out of the dip, Jaida lowered herself back down and began to tuck into her portion of the rabbit, cringing slightly as she bit into its mud-sodden fur. Once she got past that bit, it tasted fine enough; anyway, the cold was making her hungry. She glanced over to the pup; it was probably pretty freezing as well, but she wasn’t really in a position to comfort it. Any attempts to warm it up would probably freak it out, especially as she hadn’t figured out how she would communicate with it properly yet. The best she could probably do for it was to get it out of this situation- it kind of was Jaida’s fault, after all. If she hadn’t been so stupid and clumsy she wouldn’t have unwittingly lured the pup down as well.

Noki:
Her eyes watched the wolf, anxiously waiting for any kind of response. The wolf seemed to be thinking. Her brow furrowed, maybe in anger, which caused Noki to start quivering away. The she-wolf had probably made up her mind to get on with it and eat Noki. The grey pup flattened herself against the ground as if she could sink into the mud to escape her impending doom. Yet, it still didn't come. The she-wolf had seemed to relax. Noki wished that she would just make up her mind. If the wolf was going to eat Noki, she should just do it and stop leaving Noki in suspense.
The she-wolf movements were calculatingly gentle as she tore off some rabbit meat. She pushed the food towards Noki. The pup stared at the chunk. Her eyes flicked up to the she-wolf then back to the food. Could it be possible that the soon-to-be bringer of her doom was offering her food? It had to be a trap. Noki glanced around, but there was no sign of a trap. Her eyes returned to th meat. Maybe the wolf was luring her closer, but there was no need for that since Noki had no way to escape. Perhaps the she-wolf was fattening Noki up so the wolf could eat a larger meal later instead of the skin and bones that Noki was currently. That seemed the most plausible option; the wolf didn't want a bony meal, so Noki was being given food so she'd be tastier. Still, that seemed too much trouble for a pup eater to go through in order to eat just one pup. There were plenty of other, meatier pups to eat in the world. Yet, it didn't seem possible to Noki that the she-wolf was friendly while Noki's heart beat so fast and her instincts yelled at her find a way to run. Her eyes glanced at the wolf again, who was looked up at the slopes that surrounded the two wolves, her jaw moving. She seemed not that concerned to whether or not the pup grabbed the chunk of rabbit. Noki turned her gaze back to the meat.
After a second of buoying what little courage she had, Noki darted forward, snatching the meat then immediately fleeing. She attempted to climb the slope, but tumbled down into the pit again. She instead ran for whatever corner was the farthest from the supposed danger. Covered in a fresh layer of mud, Noki made herself as small as possible without ridding herself of the ability to eat the food she'd retrieved. Chewing on the chunk, eagerly, Noki ignored the particles of dirt that stuck to her teeth and taste buds, focusing instead on the juicy, delicious, precious food. Yet she struggled to swallow any as her teeth were still too soft to cause any effective bite or chew.
With perseverance, though, the meal disappeared down her gullet. Licking her lip with strangely purple tinted tongue, Noki sniffed the ground for any last morsels of food. She looked up at the she-wolf, hoping perhaps she would throw her another chunk of food. Yet, the she-wolf must've eaten the rest of the rabbit, so Noki rested her head on her paws. The day had chilled into an evening of crisp, cold air. The cold bit through her pelt and froze her skin. Noki shivered. Trying not to focus on the increasing cold, her eyes lifted to the darkening sky and the hills caging them in this pit. Caging them... With a jolt, Noki realized that if she couldn't climb the muddy walls, neither could the she-wolf. Their days were limited unless they could find a way up or some help came from outside. There must be a way out! Noki carefully studied the slopes around them. There were footholds, but they were too far up for any wolf to reach. Noki searched for a hold low enough to reach. None caught her eye. Noki glanced back and up at the slope at her back. With glee, her eyes fixed on a protruding rock lower than any other hold.

Jaida glanced at the gray pup, who was currently studying the chunk of rabbit as if it were a killer snake, seeming to be carefully deciding whether to take it or not. She looked at the pup incredulously, wondering why it seemed to be so cautious of the meat; maybe it still believed that Jaida posed a threat to it. “It’s not gonna bite you-…“ The little pup suddenly shot forwards, grabbing the chunk of meat and darting away as quickly as it had come. It made another futile attempt to escape up the slopes then retreated to a far corner, curling up with the food. Having wolfed down her own meal, Jaida watched the pup as it struggled to get the food down. A look of concern washed over Jai's features; what if it choked? Had she been irresponsible to give it the food? She let out a sigh, shaking her head. Jaida was so clueless when it came to pups; she felt like she was too young for her motherly instincts to have kicked in.
A cold breeze ruffled Jaida’s fur, causing her to shiver. It had already transitioned into early evening; how long had she been down in this dumb hole? Too long. She was cold and wet, and her thin summer coat did little to protect her against the elements. She could only imagine how the little pup was feeling. With renewed resolve to escape, Jai stood up slowly, sick of aggravating her supposedly sprained paw. She glanced around the slopes until her eyes settled on the pup, who was still curled up in the corner, eyes fixated on something; Jai followed it's gaze and realized that it was eyeing off a low rock that was sticking out of the slope. It had solid potential to offer a way out, but Jaida wasn't sure if she could quite reach it. Still, it was a promising candidate, and looked like their best chance to escape at the present moment. “You may be onto something, kiddo…” Jaida muttered as she strode towards it, careful to give the pup a wide berth so as to not upset it further. When she reached the protrusion she stood there for a moment, considering, then stood up on her hind legs so she could carefully place her fore-paws onto it. Being as short as she was, Jaida could only just reach it. She realized with disappointment there was no way she could push herself up; Jai simply didn’t have enough upper body strength to drag her body up. Maybe she could jump, but she cringed at the thought of what it would do to her ankle; by now she could tell that it was swollen. Still, before she thought of her own escape, she’d have to focus on getting the pup out first; she knew she could easily deposit it onto the rock, and from there it would have a chance to get out. She knew that would be a challenge in itself; she doubted she could get the pup to trust her enough, and it would be difficult for it to get up the slopes even from the top of the rock.
Deciding it wouldn't hurt to have a back-up option, Jaida took a couple of steps back, being careful to not land on her bad ankle as she came down off her hind-legs. She threw her head back and let out a long, clear howl for help. She wasn’t sure if anyone would even notice her plea, but honestly it didn't hurt to try. Jai lowered her muzzle again then glanced to the pup, wondering how she could communicate her idea to it. “Kid…” She began, even though she knew it would be useless to try and talk to it... she just simply didn't know how she was supposed to communicate to it. She paused for a few moments, thinking, then spied a small rock that was sitting in the mud. Quickly forming an idea in her head, Jaida looked pointedly at the pup and then picked up the rock. She walked back over to the step and stood on her hind legs once again, placing the rock onto the shelf. Jaida then made a few pointed gestures with her muzzle between the rock and the pup. Pup, rock. Rock, pup. “You get me?” She said aloud, looking straight at the pup with ears perked forwards, watching for any sign that the red-eyed pup understood the message she was trying to convey to it.

A white and colorful patterned male pup padded slowly into a clear meadow, his pink tongue looking out of his small muzzle. It was a miracle he had survived this far. Hunger gnawed even now at his belly, the only thing filling it was water, the only thing this pup could successfully hunt. Asante had run away from his family of five in a time of crisis. A large red wolf had attacked his father and his anxiety ridden sister had been acting not at all like her usual scared self. All this stress had been pressing on his mind until Adante couldn't take the panic and fled. The once bright pup was covered completely in mud, only his bright eyes were their original color. The young pup whimpered almost inaudibly and Trekked Onwards. He regretted running away. For now the danger was surely gone and his father and mother must be worried sick. But he had no idea where he was or how to get back to his sandstone cave by the lake.
Unfortunately his tired eyes didn't see the danger he was in until he was too late. He approached a small basin and got a little to close to the edge. With a wrong placed paw, Adante's feet were swept out from under him and he landed in his tail end, sliding down the mucky slope and landing in a heap between two equally mud-covered wolves.
The only other wolf he'd seen apart from his family was the big scary red shewolf who raised the ground and hurt daddy. So when he found himself so close to two other wolves, he panicked. With a squeal of fear he scrambled to his feet and ran as fast as he could back up the hill. But to no avail, he was simply running in place, mud backing up behind him in his attempt to flee.
Exhausted he collapsed again and began to cry. "Don't eat me or raise the ground! Please!" He sniffled and folded his paws over his muzzle.
This was it. He was going to die. But he'd get better right? He's die, and then mommy would find him and make him better. Obviously his knowledge of life and death was extremely limited...

Noki:
As the she-wolf moved towards the rock, Noki scrambled away to give her more room. She crouched against the muddy ground, shivering with the chill which was becoming progressively fiercer. Death still seemed a breath away as her alert eyes watched the reddish she-wolf touch the promising foothold with her mud-coated paws. As she replaced her four paws on the muddy earth, Noki noticed how one paw was lifted slightly above the others as if it were hurting. The wolf shifted position and raised her nose the sky. Vibration seemed to quiver in the air until the she-wolf lowered her head.
Noki meet her gaze as the she-wolf looked at her, then Noki shifted her stare to a stone as the she-wolf picked it up. After placing it on the protruding rock, the she-wolf made calculated gestures between the stone and Noki. The grey pup cocked her head as she mulled over the significance of the stone and what it had to do with Noki. The stone was on the rock. The she-wolf put the stone on the rock. The rock was the way to freedom. The stone would now be free of the pit if it grew legs and climbed up the hill. Noki wanted to be free. Noki could not reach the rock, but the she-wolf could. Noki needed to she-wolf to reach freedom. The she-wolf would rather eat Noki than help her, though, right? ... No, the she-wolf would've eaten Noki by now, if the wolf had wanted to, right? Right. So, was the she-wolf willing to help? She was! because the she-wolf put the stone on the rock and Noki needed to be that stone in order to escape. Noki pushed herself up to a stand and stared at the she-wolf. Hesitantly, she placed a paw forward. Emotions flickered behind her wide red eyes; fear, and distrust started to fade as new trust and hope replaced them.
She took another step forward before a sudden movement in the corner of her eye made her jump. A newly fallen wolf tumbled between the two veterans of the mud pit. Barely recognizing the pup status of the new wolf, Noki ran as new panic and fear filled her. She ran to the only shelter available and the only thing that offered any type of protection or aid. Skidding to a halt beneath the she-wolf, Noki leaned slightly against her uninjured leg. The pup peered at the newcomer between the she-wolf's front legs as he frantically fled. Noki gathered information as quickly as she could.
The cream colored pup seemed as terrified as Noki was most of the time. He struggled to climb the slope, but was as stuck in the pit as Noki or the she-wolf. Ribs shone under his filthy pelt and his belly was sunken from lack of food. Fat tears rolled down his cheeks as his jaw moved. Any threat the wolf has seemed to pose in the first few seconds after his arrival evaporated. The urge comfort the cream pup prompted Noki to step out from under the she-wolf, who had become Noki's protector the second that a threat had appeared, flash a friendly smile, and lick the salty water drops of sadness from the pup's face. But Noki didn't. She was rooted to what she now perceived as safety, unwilling to place a paw out into the dangerous, startling openness of the world.

(I couldn't resist)
Nico: Nico was having a bad day.
This was normal for Nico, in fact every day was a bad day for him. This was just a really bad day. First, he had tripped on that stupid rock. His leg had flared with pain and now he had a limp. A thorn bush had scraped his eye. That was the worst insult so far as it re-opened one of the three scars that ran over his face and eyes. If he could see, this day would have been avoided. This life would have been avoided.
Unfortunately for Nico, he was here.
He growled at nothing in particular, he was lonely, limping, lonely, bleeding, lonely, dirty. He was considering sitting down to rest (and trying to never get up again) when he felt the mud slip under his paws. He yelped, "Che cosa-" as he slid down the slope and hit his head on a rock. That made him yelp again and lay still for a few seconds. To him it seemed like a eternity. Nico wished for a quiet end maybe. Here in this pit. Fate however, seemed to love shoving him out of his wishes. He growled as he heard other wolves. Not again.. Nico struggled to his paws. A sharp pain shot up his left front leg and he lifted it. That made him more vulnerable. The mud was also moving and he toppled over again. He got up again, and this time stayed up.
Now that he was up he took stock of his situation. Then he groaned. He was in a space with three other wolves. Nico took a nervous step and herd a pup. Oh, come posso entrare in questi? he wondered as he made his way carefully over. He looked brown now, with his normaly dark silver fur caked in the mud. "Oh andiamo-Kid! Calm down, your hurting my ears. he grumbled, shaking some mud out of his eyes. It was annoying, even if he couldn't see. Then he herd the breathing of two other wolves. "Can this day get any worse?" he said out loud.

Trying to ignore the numb sensation that was creeping into her toes, Jaida watched the gray pup with fierce hopefulness as it seemed to puzzle out her actions in its mind. After a few heartbeats, the pup pushed itself to its paws, something other than wariness flickering in its large eyes. Hope? Hesitant trust? It took a step forward, and Jaida didn’t dare move, feeling as if one single twitch of an ear would send the pup scurrying back to the opposite side of the mud pit.
Before Jaida had time to feel a sense of encouragement that the pup was seemingly willing to go along with her plan, two things happened in very quick succession. First, a muddy form appeared between she and Jaida, signaling that yet another wolf had fallen victim to the mud trap. Then, Jaida was suddenly made aware that the red-eyed pup had scurried underneath her and was leaning against one of her legs. Jai couldn't help feel a little touched at the pup's trust of her; it seemed as if the 'threat' of the stranger had erased the misgivings the deaf pup may have had towards Jaida, at least for the time being. The little one was currently peering out at the newcomer, who had begun to run off in a panic, making its futile attempt to escape from the muddy hole. Jai considered him with her greenish eyes. He appeared to be yet another pup; a small, light-pelted pup who looked like he hadn’t eaten a substantial meal for a worrying amount of time. Jai suddenly found herself wishing that she hadn’t finished off the rabbit; he looked like he desperately needed the food. He quickly appeared to realize that his efforts were of no use and the cream-pelted pup collapsed into a sobbing heap.
"Don't eat me or raise the ground! Please!" After the muteness of the other pup, Jaida was so surprised to hear this pup’s small voice that she barely registered the strangeness of his words. “I’m not going to hurt you... If we're going to get out of this mud-pit, you're going to have to trust me on that.” The auburn-furred she-wolf said in the most reassuring tone she could muster, eyes locked onto the new pup, who hadn't made any effort to stand up from where it had collapsed in the mud. Suddenly, a shrill yelp rang out somewhere behind Jaida, heralding the entrance of yet another wolf. She turned her head to look at the newcomer, wincing inwardly as he hit his head on a rock and came to rest at the foot of the hill. Scars covered his face, particularly in the eye area. Struggling to stay upright, the wolf carefully made his way over after a few attempts of finding his feet. She watched him carefully, feeling a wave of protectiveness for the pup that was hiding hiding underneath her; the adult didn't appear to be an immediate threat, but she didn't let her guard down. He’s blind, Jaida's voice echoed in her mind. Well, that was a little obvious, especially by the way he carefully placed his paws. As he drew closer, his voice rang out in a grumble, "Kid! Calm down, your hurting my ears.” This was followed by an equally cheery, "Can this day get any worse?" Something led Jaida to believe that this wolf wasn’t the optimistic type. Honestly, she couldn’t blame him; she wasn’t feeling wildly optimistic at the present moment either.
“Probably.” She replied simply to his second statement, without changing her position; she didn't want to accidentally step on the little red-eyed pup. “But not if we manage to get out of this bloody pit. Look, I’ve got an idea if you’re willing to listen.” Jaida said firmly as she eyed the silvery newcomer, whose fur was saturated with mud like the rest of them. She knew she had probably come off as a little impatient, but she was sick to death of standing around in this freezing cold mud-pit. Plus, time was running out; if they waited much longer, the pups could be in a critical condition.

Adante stopped cowering when he realized they weren't going to hurt him. They aren't like the red shewolf that spat and growled. They weren't focused on him, they wrre focused on getting out. Standing up, wobbly at first, he raised his head, ignoring the male wolf that had addressed him. Scoping out the situation he pawed at the mud...he used to dig in the den....
"Uh, ma'am....can't you just dig stairs?" He asked humbly staring at his muddy feet, he looked up at the red eyed she pup. She didn't like him....Adante's ears dropped in defeat. His plan was dumb, why did he even try....
(Sorry for shortness, I had no muse)

Noki:
As soon as the next arrival appeared, Noki was incredibly glad she hadn't emerged from under her protector. The new wolf was large and smelled male. Blood dribbled down the side of his face from a re-opened scar covering his eyes. Noki wondered how he saw with all those scars over his eyes. It occurred to her that perhaps he couldn't see at all. That must be impossible, though. Noki couldn't imagine not being able to see. There was so much in the world to see! If he couldn't see, how did he know where he was going? Maybe he didn't. That was probably why he fell in the pit. He seemed to realize that he wasn't alone in the pit. He immediately headed towards the trio of wolves after he fell. Scent... duh! Of course, he would be able to smell things. That must be how he survived. Still he might still be able to see. Every wolf needed sight!
Noki glanced up at the she-wolf above her. The she-wolf had been moving her jaw, looking at the cream-colored pup. The movement of his heaving chest slowed, his tensed shoulders relaxed, and his position became less terrified and more relaxed. The calm seemed to be a response to some invisible message. Noki looked back towards the male. His jaw moved as he approached. Noki's protector immediately looked towards the male. She moved her jaw in response. Then the other pup's jaw also moved. Noki's gaze flicked from one jaw movement to the next, fixing on the pup, whose jaw had been the most recent motion. The inexplicable jaws frustrated Noki. Why were they all moving their jaws? It made no sense! And the most frustrating thing of all was that the wolves seemed to respond to the movements. They were exchanging some invisible messages and Noki was suddenly feeling like she was missing something. She was missing something...
Noki would have to figure what exactly she was missing later. The male pup's ears had drooped and he looked dejected. The urge to comfort rose up again, even more powerful, but staying under her protector seemed even more urgent. The new male could pose a real threat. Noki glanced towards that threat, nervously, then her gaze returned to the pup. She shifted her weight from left to right and back repeatedly, indecisively anxious. Puffing out a quick breath of fear as she made her choice, Noki put a single white paw forward, fixing on the other pup's eyes with hers. She wished he would just join her under her protector without any prompting. Maybe she could send him an invisible message. How... the jaws had to be the bridge! Noki moved her jaw up and down, willing the cream-colored pup to understand her will that he should get to safety. Maybe that was all she needed to do, move her jaw and wish her message to be known.
