Blood

Lykos quietly followed his brother Kylon, waiting for directions. Technically they had both been sent on this mission by their parents, but naturally, Lykos followed Kylon as his leader. Kylon was much more qualified than he was. He had a strong will and a brave heart. He always was the one to come up with the ideas, but most of all, he could easily perform any evil task without question. Lykos was not sure how Kylon was able to do it. Whenever Lykos was asked to kill, or do something sinister, it simply did not feel right. He tried, but it gave him an odd twisted feeling inside.

He had killed another wolf only once before in his life. She was a spy, trespassing in their territory. When he had caught her, Lykos could see the hapless look of fear in her eyes. She fought hard, but she was so much smaller than he was. Lykos knew that they had both known who was bound to win. When Lykos returned, the rest of the pack showered him with praises. Every compliment he received, felt like knives. It was odd because Lykos knew that he was supposed to feel special and proud, so why didn't he? Lykos watched his brother trot along proudly. He was gleaming with pride, ready to honor his pack. Lykos couldn't help but sink low to the ground as he walked. He wanted to know how much longer this trip would take but he didn't dare ask. Respect. Respect. Respect. A very important rule for a young pup to learn.

Kylon stepped one paw in front of the other, like he had countless times on their long journey through the lands. His large paws shifted against the loose soil and his claws dug into the earth for grip. Each stride flexed his protruding muscles that lined his legs, and twisted his waist, leaving his long bushy tail to follow with a gentle sway.

In all his life it seemed Kylon had never made a journey as long as this one, but this was the ultimate test of his loyalty to his pack, and he would, by the evilness of his very breath, never back down. A deep throaty grumble was the only thing Kylon could do to keep from letting another complaint slip out, as he gritted his teeth. Luminescent golden eyes flashed about the surroundings, and then they rested on his brother that followed behind him. Their was a quivering of sulkiness in Kylon's focus as he studied the bent frame of the blue male, but his tongue held back any scornful speech, for he had something else to say.

"Stop, and look at this place we have come to." The large gray head swung forward, ears laid back in reproach, but a sinister tone was in his voice and expression. "It is barren and desolate of life. It is bleak and deserted, but can you smell the darkness that broods here, the evilness that crawls in the shadows." Kylon took a step forward, his skull lowered to level out his back and he peered with an ominous gaze at the marble colored slopes and the dried thatch foliage. "It is ready for us to awaken it." His voice had lowered a notch, and the sinister tone turned into a rumbling hiss as the golden backed male stood silent for a moment before jerking forward and continuing his gate, if not faster than before they stopped. "Now keep up Kos! The sun doesn't care where we are when it fades, but we care what we do in the darkness." Kylon quoted the saying their parents would always tell them for lessons, as he mapped out the lay of the land in his head. They would find evil in the darkness.

Lykos was not sure how to respond to that. His surroundings were desolate and empty. They were definitely not what he had pictured. How could there be any wolves occupying this barren place. Although there was no sign of life, Lykos knew what Kylon was talking about when he mentioned the evilness here. This whole place was overflowing with evil. It was creepy, in an insane, demented way. Lykos picked up his pace, trying to stay close to Kylon. "Yeah. It's pretty...uh...evil. So, when do you think we're going to find other wolves?" he asked, careful not to be rude, "No one really lives here, right? They can't. I mean, I wouldn't want to, but, well, what do I know?" He snapped his mouth shut. Just stop talking. Lykos feared his brother. Not in a scary way but more like a respectful way. Lykos was glad to have a brother like Kylon. Though he was better at most things than Lykos, he was never boastful. He was proud to have such a thriving pack. Rather than laughing at Lykos and shaking his head, Kylon would help him and show him how to do things correctly. Although, he still was the kind of wolf that doesn't take failure as an option. If Lykos never had a brother like Kylon, he probably never would have made it to where he was now. He probably would not have been on this mission.

[Blood]

"Oh we will find wolves alright, believe me." Kylon stated matter-of-fact as he glared out at the desolate horizon that glowed with red colors of the sunset. Sometimes Lykos just didn't see how unnaturally evil worked, and needed help understanding that. He listened to his brother patiently, letting one of his ears drop back to were the gray and blue wolf followed him. "Lykos, sometimes evil starts out in the most unlikely of places but grows into much bigger and greater things." The large golden male stopped in his tracks and stood with head held high, waiting for his brother to come to his side. "This places is waiting for us." Kylon took in a deep breath and then let it out in a slow sigh, waiting for Lykos to stand beside him. His gaze concentrated on the sun that gradually died and sank beneath the earth, its causatum of death bleeding out into the sky. Reds, oranges, and yellows painted the atmosphere, and the vibrant hues reflected in Kylon's eyes.

Lykos suddenly felt very silly for questioning Kylon. He trusted his brother more than any other wolf he knew. He trusted him, and he was satisfied with his response. "Lykos, sometimes evil starts out in the most unlikely of places but grows into much bigger and greater things," his brother had said to him. Lykos came up beside Kylon. He looked at his face with wide eyes, obediently listening to what he said. Evil grows from small things, indeed. I may seem unqualified for a mission like this, but I will grow. I will become bigger and greater.

There was no longer a shard of doubt in Lykos' mind. He began wagging his tail excitedly. "Well than, what are we waiting for, brother?" Lykos was ready for this mission. He wasn't going to let his pack down.

Kylon faced his brother, staring into his large blue eyes with a soft sparkle in his own golden ones. The large male loved his brother's admiration for him, it gave Kylon on such a feeling of superiority and power. Growing up back in their pack, Lykos always sought out wisdom and instruction from him, making Kylon a prouder wolf than ever and slightly dependent on his brother's company and worshipfulness.

"Lykos..." The gray ears pressed forward as he spoke, Kylon's thoughts processing and organizing as he slowly continued. "This mission we were sent on isn't one that we are going to return to our pack once we complete it. No, it's a mission that is meant to be lived out. We are taking what we have learned and grown up with, and starting a new life. We are spreading our pack by finding other wolves that we can change for the mission. You have to keep your mind set on that Lykos. We will probably never return home, but we will always have eachother."

Kylon stood tall as he finished what he wanted to say. His broad chest puffed out with each breath he took, and his golden legs were spread far apart in a power stance. The blazing sunset made his speckled coat gleam and glow, and both of their shadows stretched like giant trees laid flat. Lykos' tail began to wag and his expression turned to excitement. "Well then, what are we waiting for, brother?" The gray and gold male let a smug grin crack his lips as he replied, "Yes, what are we waiting for. Let's go." Kylon turned with a swish of his tail and trotted over the barren ground, his large shadow following him as he walked off into the distance.

This was a mission that Lykos would never return from. He would never see his family, his friends ever again. It was certainly something to take seriously. The only reason Lykos was not nervous, was the fact that he would not be on his own through the whole mission. Kylon would always be by his side, and who knows, Lykos might meet some other wolves to become close to as well.

He stared off into the desolate horizon. A new sense of adventure filled up inside Lykos. New places to go, new things to see, new wolves to meet. He followed after his brother, proud to be a part of something so great. He felt the cool dry wind in his fur calling him further into the valley. Keep going! Evil awaits you! it said. Freedom and independence rushed through his mind as he followed his brother. Excitement and fear for the journey ahead.
