(( theragingstorm)) Venus:
The day was overcast and bleak. The few sick, twisted trees in the area were dull and almost withered looking, not necessarily dead, but tired, almost like they'd never had much life in them in the first place. A timid mouse peeked out from some of the drifts of dead and fallen leaves and started scurrying to another drift. He never made it. A swift, light colored paw came down on the tail and before the mouse could blink its neck was snapped swiftly and cleanly and he was swallowed within a matter of seconds. It wasn't much of a meal, but she hadn't exactly been raging-for-food hungry, really it had been more to take the edge off her boredom than her hunger. The pack was quiet, she knew there was something going on because it was the way of evil wolves to scheme and plot and Fjord certainly wasn't the type to sit back and wait while there was blood to be had. Something was up, she just wasn't sure what it was yet. She ran her tongue over her chops and then began to groom. She needed to think; what had happened since she'd come to Midnight Silence? The pack meeting, an alphess had been introduced, and a gammess and healer, that should have been a start. Alpha Fjord had also mentioned something about plans, plans for what? That was what she didn't know and wanted to figure out. There was something big in the works and she wanted to stay one step ahead of whatever chaos would come with it. She licked her forepaw and scrubbed it across her nose, licked it again and brought it up behind her ears. She would find out soon enough, so in the meantime, she would wait.

The weak sunlight did little to warm Travesty, and his skin was easily chilled by the light breeze. He was supposed to be collecting herbs, but everything in this dang forest was dead. How was a healer supposed to harvest plants if there weren't any? Huffing, the male staggered to his paws. He started hopping towards a few barren trees. Perhaps there would be a mouse at the very least. His uneven gait had once bothered him, but now the aging healer was used to it. Actually, he couldn't remember a time before the mauling. If he still had real feelings, he might have pitied himself, but his emotions had been lost to him years ago. Now he was nothing but a lump of scars who could heal. Travesty grunted in surprise as he saw the young she-wolf. What was her name again? Vivienne? Ventre? He flicked his one ear in thought, and switched paths to approach the light colored wolf. He hopped towards her, his bright eyes searching the ground around her. "Hey. What are you doing here?" he snorted uncaringly. "Remind me, what is your name again?"Fierfly

Venus:
She was working on smoothing and fluffing the long, voluminous tail that trailed behind her when a bark rudely brought her out of the almost pleasant quiet of the moment. The old healer, Travesty wanted to know what she was doing and wanted to know her name. She raised her head, perked her oversized ears in his direction and surveyed him, smokey blue eyes looking him up and down, trying to decide if he was worth her while. He was being just a little demanding barging in and demanding to know her intentions, but he hadn't liked that braggart Odin either. For now she wouldn't take him too seriously, just seriously enough. She straightened, "Oh, I'm sorry, I thought this was pack land. Last time I checked anyone part of Midnight Silence could roam the territory as they wished. Maybe I was mistaken." She curved the corners of her mouth ever so slightly up, gently deepening the smile that her slightly too-large front canines had already permanently plastered on her face.
The hint of a grin was wiped away in an instant, sort of a you-blink-and-you-miss-it sort of a deal. She turned back to carelessly licking her paw and coming her claws along her tail and other grooming techniques. "How can I help you Travesty?" she used his name and with-held hers on purpose, just to see what sort of wolf this Travesty really was. She was looking for information, if he was healer than he might have some, and maybe...just maybe...they could make a trade.

Travesty blinked calmly as the she-wolf informed him of things he already knew. What was the point of telling him this was pack territory? Of course it was. What did she see him as? Stupid? He certainly wasn't the smartest wolf around, but he wasn't retarded. The male grunted, and hobbled closer to the tree. "Of course this is pack land. Of course you can travel it. I was asking what you were doing by this very tree. I was asking if you were hunting or patrolling," he told her, leaning over towards the tree roots. He let out a half smile when he saw the smallest herb. But, it was a herb. Yarrow. He nipped the leaf steam and grabbed the herb. "I may be old, but don't mistake me as an idiot," he told her through the measly leaf. At her question, he rolled his eyes. This silly, naive, little puppy was trying to weasel something out of him. This was why Travesty didn't talk to young ones. They thought they were so smart. They hadn't even started to see the world. "That's the problem, you can't help me," he snorted, and he started to walk away. Then he looked back at the lazy she-wolf. "Unless you happen to know where I can find some herbs."Fierfly

Venus:Travesty did not appear to be in a good mood as he snapped at her smart aleck reply to his initial question. So she had been wrong, he hadn't been trying to chase her away, he'd just been curious. Mistakes were not allowed in this new pack, she couldn't afford to rub anyone the wrong way, but it was better that - if she did make a mistake, she make it now and learn for later. His eyes scanned the ground and he brushed some leaves away until he found a small herb and he neatly plucked the plant from the ground. He was only gathering herbs and healing things. Good luck, not only were they in the Barren Wastes, it was Autumn. Nothing was growing well at this time. But he seemed determined. He must have noticed her watching him and barked for her not to mistake him for stupid just because he was older. She shrugged almost in apology, but more in an effort to smooth things over between her and the healer. "Of course, The Alpha wouldn't accept any stupid wolves and as healer you're obviously wise with the earth. I was under the impression you were trying to chase me from a spot, that's all." she stood and stretched, torso leaning down towards the earth as her forepaws and arms stretched out and rump and tail in the air as they pulled back to get any stiffness out of her front half. "And, if you're still curious, I was thinking." Travesty didn't appear to still be curious as he grumbled and turned away to go and look for some more herbs, declining her being able to help him, then he hesitated and asked if she knew where any more herbs were. "'Fraid I don't, you might find lungwort or late crocuses and their vines clinging to the steep rock soil if there are any left." One part of her said she should leave and get out of his way, but she was curious of he would actually find the plants, and maybe if she found them herself she could trade them for conversation. A healer had to have some idea of the pack's plans right? It was an honored position in a pack to be healer, weren't they a sort of double as counselor as well? So she got to her feet and began casually following Travesty at a cautious distance. (( theragingstorm ))

Travesty watched the young wolf with mild interest. To be quite frank, he missed being younger. He missed the days when he could get to his paws without his bones creaking in disappointment. It was honestly a terrible sound to hear your bones creak. His ear flicked in displeasure as he imagined the sound. Well, enough on that topic. In his mind, he started on another topic. But he was forced to put it to the side as the young wolf addressed him again. She was intent on apologizing. Well it was about time. The words sure stroked his ego. The male would take any compliment as long as it boosted that ego of his. He tried to flick his ear, and a moment passed before he remembered he didn't have an ear. He frowned angrily, he always forgot which parts of him were missing. They all seemed to be missing. Too many limbs. Travesty rolled his eyes. "One if my favorite things to do. Just think," he paused. "And how would I manage to chase you away? I'm under the impression you are younger and thus more agile then me," the older wolf informed her. Jeez, some wolves were so naive. He frowned as she explained how she hadn't seen any herbs. What a waste. Honestly, why had he even bothered talking to a younger wolf? They never had any good information. "Thanks for next to nothing," he grumbled. Travesty hopped away. The male snarled as he heard footfalls behind him. While he wasn't the most agile wolf, he picked up his pace. This young wolf was very persistent. Travesty grunted. No trees. This would be a fun chase. "If you want something from me, you'll have to catch me first," he whispered to himself. What a strange day. Fierfly

Venus:
Travesty took her apology well. He puffed his chest and raised his head slightly, the ghost of something besides the grumbling snarl fleetingly taking place on his maw. The base of his stump-ear twitched and he grumbled and rolled his eyes. "One of my favorite things to do. Just think," she rolled her own eyes in reply. "Not without purpose, I assure you," again the ghostly smile permanently fixed under the slightly too-large canines deepened and she raised her eyebrows the smallest bit, letting her lids fall half-closed, not out of laziness, but for the purpose of her own careful warning to the healer. Not enough to be a threat, but he ought to know that nothing was as it seemed. At first glance at the healer many probably would have thought he was a frail, maybe even skittish old veteran. He was anything but, he was gruff, determined, and a healer of all things! Things were never as they seemed...
He was also very put-out with his age and many injuries as he asked how he would have chased her away. The she-wolf shrugged, "Upon joining this pack I swore to follow the rules and honor my superiors, should the Healer of Midnight Silence wish me to leave my perch, I would leave." she replied as she trotted easily after him. Travesty grumbled again and said something - she didn't quite catch what exactly it was, warning or challenge, but as he steadily picked up his own pace she took the gesture to heart and she bolted. She'd grown up running through the steep Mountain terrain and it came naturally to her now as her long, slender legs easily carried her forward, almost flying around Travesty and breezing easily ahead of him to another gathering of leaves which she pawed aside and was rewarded with a few leaves of young burdock. Neatly and gently she took up the whole plant, root and leaves in her teeth and the grin deepened again at Travesty. "However, I don't think you'd want me to leave just yet." she spoke expertly around the leaves, careful not to crush them. The herbs were her bargaining chip, she was not going to crush them if she could help it.

This small wolf seemed very intent on irritating him. It was quite hilarious. A small, tiny, wolf who was ranked lower then himself was trying to goat him into getting upset! Ha! It wouldn't happen, for Travesty had promised himself not to yell at any young wolf. He needed to earn trust, not gather enemy's.
He barely took heed of what the she-wolf said, for he could care much less. Why he had even bothered talking to her was a puzzle. This pack was changing him from his gruff old self into a somewhat grumpy wolf. This was not acceptable! He shook out his shaggy fur, grunting for the 100th time that day. Honestly, could this day get any stranger?
On second thought, he shouldn't have asked or even thought the silly question. Of course things could and would get stranger. Oh how ironic things were. He paused at her mention of the oath, and opened his maw to command her to leave. Then it snapped shut. Did he really want her to leave? This was the most conversation he had had with someone in a long while. Most conversations in this pack consisted of grunts and angry snarls. This time he had gotten away with a few intelligent and somewhat snarky replies.
Travesty glanced behind him, and saw how close the she-wolf was, and she was carrying herbs! Stunned, he stopped at once. He bit his lip, and growled. He sat down, and scratched himself behind the ear. What in the world did this wolf want from him? He wanted to know, so he pretended like he was trying to keep some secret.
"What do you want?" came Travesty's reply. The red male winced when he saw how she was holding the herbs. She was practically strangling them, if that was possible. "You are holding them wrong. Any healing syrup I would have wanted to chew out of these leaves is gone," He grumbled.

Venus:
Travesty did not seem overly impressed with her promise to leave should he so command and merely huffed in reply, then when she overtook him and pawed the burdock out of hiding and plucked it up he stopped dead. Ha! He hadn't known they were there! The advantage to living her entire life in the cold mountains, she knew the mountain plants better than most, even some healers as her sister had been taking an interest in the occupation when she'd left. Unfortunately Venus herself was no healer and despite her efforts some of the moisture in the leaves was being wrung out. Curse her teeth! Sometimes the extra-large canines were more trouble than they were worth. Somewhat apologetically she gently tossed the herbs into the air and caught them on the bridge of her nose so her teeth wouldn't have to strangle her bargaining chip.
"Just some information," she assured the healer. "Let me ask you a few questions, maybe help you find a few more herbs, give you my name and if it suits you we can go our separate ways." she hated having to give more than she was asking in this deal, herbs in autumn would not be easy, even if she was more familiar with the climate, but if a little extra would get her the information than it would be worth it. "Do we have a deal Honored Healer Travesty?"

The little wolf was cunning, Travesty would give her that. She knew how to get things out of him. He made a mental note to go back and plant some of the burdock so he could start a garden. With so little herbs in this barren land, it was a waste just to pluck them all and leave the remains to die. He glanced behind the she-wolf, and saw one or two roots still embedded into the earth. He nodded satisfaction before returning his attention to the wolf standing so proudly in front of him.
He shifted his weight awkwardly, but kept his gaze fixed on the female. He didn't have much left to loose, literally. He perked up as she offered her side of the agreement. Whatever she wanted to know, he doubted it was worth a whole seasons worth of herbs. She was probably going to ask something very unintelligent, like what his favorite prey was.
Nonetheless, Travesty nodded his head. "Sure, whatever you say oh wise one," he said. Knowing her name would come in handy. He had to keep better track of names. Else wise he could be stuck in the scenario again. "Well? You aren't a rock are you?" he grumbled impatiently.

Venus:
Travesty seemed hesitant as he mentally argued with himself whether her proposal was worth accepting, but agreement finally won out and he nodded and grumbled some smart come-back. The way his head was moving she wasn't entirely sure she was reading his lips properly, but something about being wise and the sarcastic body language told her she wasn't missing much. Then he grumbled again about how long she was taking to ask. She rolled her eyes again and quickly and carefully selected her next words:
"It is my understanding that in most packs the healers are among the highest ranks, the alphas take them into council and they are told of plans before the rest of the pack. So if you are held in such esteem to Alpha Fjord, tell me Travesty: What are his plans?" If Travesty had any semblance of importance to the white alpha then he would know, if he didn't, it just might wound his pride enough for him to ask and still get back to her, or if he was insulted entirely then she would have to find some way to get back in his good graces and see what else she could learn.

A roll of eyes, then silence. Silence was a rather puzzling thing, it could stretch over anything, or it wouldn't show up at all. Eyes narrowing, Travesty watched the little wolf carefully as she started to speak. Fjord's news? He thought back to a small argument he had with Skia, heavens above that wolf was annoying, and how she had brought up something. Something that might be a secret, but it was far from news to him. "Well, Fjord is preparing to move territories, and Skia is expecting his puppies," he huffed, glancing over to see the small wolf's reply and reaction. She just seemed to be thinking deeply, a strange pastime, but then again this wolf was far from normal. A small huff of laughter rose in his throat as he looked at her. Once he had thought he ruled the world. A frown set on his face. He hoped the reality of the world's cruelty wouldn't break this pups attitude. She had something in her, a spark of defiance, that would come to her aid in years to come. Fierfly

Venus:
Travesty didn't seem overly impressed with her light challenge of his actual importance and standing in the pack. Instead he heaved a breath like a parent whose child was trying their patience and shrugged and gave up the information: Venus's eyes zeroed in on his maw to make sure she was understanding him correctly: Fjord was moving territories, and Skia was pregnant with his spawn. The news on the Alphess she was able to push aside: although it was interesting, and while she respected the alphess, it was little more than gossip at this point: although she'd likely be assigned to be the brats' babysitter once they were born, there was nothing strategic to be gained from the information. She might be blessed with some time to prepare herself for the task, but other than that, nothing much was to be gained. When she had nothing else to do with her time she could puzzle out the reasons for this breeding, size and strength, genetics; or position, power, attraction...it didn't really matter, she could puzzle it out later. For now she focused on the news on Fjord.
"This move: do you know where we're heading and for what purpose? Resources? Space maybe...or...politics?" the last word was said very carefully, but with a distinct slip at the end that ended in a snarl. She detested politics, of course she'd sworn herself to this pack so she'd have to play them like the pack wanted her to, but she didn't like them: at all, zero, done. She was not one to dance about in debates, she detested them, and that was why she played the game so well.
