Pearl:
The tight feeling of hunger scratched at Pearl’s stomach as she wandered the hilly plains. It had been a good week since she had eaten any substance, and her last meal hadn’t even completely filled her belly, but she hardly filled herself during meals anyways. Stuffing herself wasn’t a pleasure she took part in, it not only gave her a sick feeling in the stomach, it also filled her with guilt and shame. Nature has always provided her with the proper nutrition since the day she was born, and she wasn’t going to misuse the generosity of the circle of life.
Soft grasses were trampled under her small paws as she trotted along the rise of the river bank. She knew there had been a river near when she had smelt the fresh scent on the breeze. This was just the perfect opportunity, for the summer days were warm and draining, and the heat was sometimes hard to bear, plus a tasty catch could also satisfy her hunger.
Making her way down the river bank, Pearl spotted a couple flat stones that bridged out from the water’s edge, perfect for making fishing easier. She crept through the tall weeds and stalked over the soppy ground that smelt of marsh and fish. The strong scents made her stomach churn, and Pearl knew she had to get something in her belly to keep from gagging. With cautious steps, the silent hunter perched on the flat stones, her claws spread on the slippery surfaces as she intently watched the flowing water. The river was surprisingly clear, and it wasn’t long before her eyes caught the gleam of the sun bouncing off of a scaly back. Back and forth Pearl’s eyes went as she followed the fish travel through the cool waters. Her stance was tense as she lunged forward to make her catch, but misfortune came upon her as her grip slipped from the stones and her tail followed the rest of her into the water.
A great splash indicated the failure of her attempt to catch the fish, but the small she-wolf wasn’t under the water for long, because the river was shallow we’re she was hunting and the current slower. Wide eyed and ears flat, Pearl steadied herself before coughing a few times to clear her lungs.
