Koa;
Stormy, lithe, clever... these were all words to describe Koa. Alphess, another. She had started the Ivory Wild pack many seasons ago now—and the little family still hadn't taken off to where she had envisioned it. It had been a hurried decision, to be sure, but in the moment, it had worked. But she knew she could do more. Was worth more. Could achieve... more.
She had a small gathering of wolves, it was true, and indeed the territory was not that big to begin with—but it still felt to be dragging her down, somewhat. Her Gammess, Nanouk, was gone—and she had been for years. Zeus, their Recruit—well, who was to say? He had reappeared some seasons ago with an apology, but had left again soon after. There was also Leviticus, their newest member. He was young. Willing. But was he strong enough to carry the missing positions of two other wolves on his shoulders, alone? Koa doubted it. If she was having her own doubts about the empty spaces within their pack, than surely it would be too much for young Levi...
But then, there was Epicenter. Koa's thoughts lingered on her Beta as she moved through the treeline of her territory. He was the most steadfast of them all, by a long shot, too. He had been with her since well before the beginning. He had never wavered, not once. Koa found herself thinking on him a good deal as she made her way across the Wildflower Clearing.
And of course, there was Yukio. A daring wolf, a prohibited creature for an Alphess such as herself... and yet Koa was quite fond of him. What could happen between her and Yukio, in the future? Perhaps everything... then again, perhaps nothing. Koa dipped her head as she continued moving towards her destination. Yukio... she would miss Yukio if she were to leave. They did not know each other exceptionally well, but she felt that even for their short handful of conversations, she knew him enough. He had once said that he loved her. She could see herself loving him, too...
Minutes passed in silence as Alphess Koa thought all of this over, and then some. It wasn't until she came upon the form of another in the dying light of the afternoon that she looked up. The sun had turned everything a romantic orange—a perfect colour for the small territory. The wildflowers were in bloom, and the trees were moving soundlessly in the evening breeze.
She approached the form slowly, familiarly. Her Awareness wasn't even activated—she knew her pack land, and she knew Epicenter. The tall, strong form of the green and brown Beta stood before her, mere feet away from the border. Slowly, but in steady form, Yukio began to dwindle. The more she looked at Epicenter, the more it came to be true. At first, ideas of Epicenter beyond anything but a Beta had seemed foolish. He was too hungry for power—too professional and calculating. Cold, even, though never to her.
But now, the more she gazed at him in the golden light of the sun, with his quiet stare, his unassuming stance... the more she came to realize that all of that might not be a bad thing, after all. She was quite power-hungry herself, if it came right down to it. And Epicenter had never once made her feel small, as so many males had done in the past... And had she ever appreciated how handsome he was, before now?
Koa exhaled quietly, her mint-green eyes twinkling in the last of the sun.
"Are you ready, dear Beta?" Her voice broke the silence gently, giving no hints as to what was going through her mind. She did not wait for an answer, for she knew him well enough to know that he would be ready. She stepped past him slowly, brushing across his pelt as she did so, then lifted her head to look beyond the border. In the distance were the valley's border mountains—and beyond them, who knew? But Koa knew who she wanted by her side when she found out.
Perhaps in another life the once-Alphess would return to the territory previously-known as Ivory Wild. But in this life, Koa had larger plans for herself. Plans that did not include being tied to one place, with a cap on the greatness she could achieve. She had thought that being an Alphess was her calling, and perhaps it could have been if things had turned out differently... but as it was, there was a new path she felt herself being pulled to. The call had shifted, and was now coming to her from beyond the far mountains.
She looked back only once, to give Epicenter a fleeting glance and to spare the golden-lit flowers one last smile. And then she took a few more steps, and left the Wildflower Clearing behind her forever.
-Fade-
