A Howl in the Distance

Marisole stood at the border together. She looked up at the big round moon, and let out a melodious howl.she howled for a few minutes and when she was finished she sat at the border, alone . Now all she had to do was wait.

Piala loved spring nights. The refreshing air and peaceful whisper of wind through the grass soothed the stresses of being an alpha like little else. The moon was full and the alpha was wide awake, taking advantage of the extra light to do some hunting. She was on the trail of something unusual, some sort of rodent by the smell, when the howl caught her ears. Her tail wagged. Recently she had begun seeing more signs of other wolves both at her border and outside it. She figured the coming of spring was encouraging more travel, and she was beginning to think that rebuilding her pack to its former glory was not so far-fetched a goal after all. Smiling, Piala bounded across the plains toward the border.

The she-wolf quickly sniffed out the location of the newcomer. Her white coat shone like the moon as she approached the pink wolf. "Hello," she said when she got within earshot. "I am Piala, alpha of Eternal Snowfall." She chose not to ask any questions at first. The less she said, the more the stranger would have to say, and the better she would be able to judge her character.

"Hello Piala, I am Silvestra. I wish very much to join your pack. I have been searching for a pack and yours seems suitable for me." Silvestra eyed Piala, she hoped that her skills would be enough to impress Piala. She wanted so much to join this pack but she knew that she must not seem too needy. She waited patiently for Piala's response and she prepped to demonstrate her skills to Piala.

Piala nodded at the end of Silvestra's introduction. The she-wolf seemed quite sure of herself. The alphess was tempted to accept this wolf into the pack without a question; the pack was currently tiny, and Piala needed all the help she could get defending the borders. No one had threatened Eternal Snowfall recently, but with only two members, the pack was vulnerable. Piala thought better of it, though. "Okay, Silvestra," Piala said amicably, "it's nice to meet you. I must make sure you know that Eternal Snowfall has only two members currently: myself and another she-wolf. Knowing this, if you still desire to join us, please tell me how you would contribute to this pack." She white wolf sat down and looked at the grey wolf serenely.

Oh my, thought Silvestra, i didn't know the pack was so small. Silvestra doubted her decision about joining the pack, but she knew she needed a pack so she proceeded to address Piala. "Well Piala, not to brag, but i'm very good at hunting. I am also good at standing my ground. I'm also good at settling arguments and such. I know i don't have many skills but I'm always up for learning new things." She waited for Piala's response hoping that her skills were enough.

The white she-wolf smiled at Marisole's response. She seemed to project confidence but her words betrayed an inward unsurety. This was a quality that Piala admired. To be able to appear self-assured while still doubting oneself could lead to better decision-making. She looked a bit more closely at pale pink wolf, wondering what place she might eventually find in the pack.

After a long, thoughtful pause, Piala spoke: "It certainly sounds like the skills you do have will come in handy. You're welcome to join Eternal Snowfall. I would like to hunt together soon, but for now I think I will head back to the dens. They're near the center of the territory. Would you care to join me?"
