A Stroll Into The Unknown [Join Request]

Rosyn carelessly wandered around, feeling the rich brown soil underneath her paws. She didn't know how she arrived there, she had just been chasing anything that moved - that included agile rodents she couldn't catch and bright insects she couldn't, and wouldn't, eat. What do I do now? She thought. I'm hungry and I can't smell anything I can eat! She sat down on a cool patch of emerald green grass and pondered for a moment. She knew that anything could be in the deep part of the forest, possibly even other wolves. She wanted to avoid others - many were quite hostile towards her - but she was starving. Would she risk her life for a few scraps of food? Well, she had done it before successfully. Maybe she would try it again.

She decided she would. She took a few steps and breathed in deeply before carrying on. Apparently the wolves in packs get more food. Who told me that? I don't know, it's not like there's any point in trying to remember, she thought to herself. Her wandering mind soon got her into trouble as she tripped on a mound of dirt. She whined in pain, overdramatic as always. She quickly realised it didn't hurt and shut herself up. Another wolf could have heard her! Then again, she was growing used to the idea of being in a pack with friends and food.

"Are you enjoying your stroll?" a low voice came from behind Rosyn, and the smell of another wolf filled the air as if from nowhere. Perjury's yellow eyes glinted as she stepped around the other wolf, a patch of ground beneath her feet conspicuously darkened, as though it had just been upturned, but no other apparent disturbances. "I do hope that you are aware that the ground upon which you walk is long claimed by the Frigid Plague."

It was spring, and the alphess had shed her thick winter coat along with whatever enhancement it gave her stature. She was a petite wolf, never more apparent than in the warmer months. An ignorant outsider would look at her size and underestimate her strength; thankfully her fame—or infamy—had spread far enough that she seldom encountered wolves who were entirely unaware of what power lay beneath her surface, but the valley was a big place. There would always be pockets of ignorance here and there.

Rosyn was strolling along when suddenly another wolf appeared. She was unnerved by the fact that she hadn't smelt or heard her approach. She wasn't sure whether the question was rhetorical or not but the pup knew that she was wandering around in a claimed territory. "Um... I didn't realise... I'm sorry, I was just looking for food and I thought about how pack wolves get more food so I came here. Has Frigid Plague got food? I'd join! I might look skinny and I find it difficult to hunt and fight but I wouldn't leave a friend in need... no matter what!"


Rosyn stared up at the wolf, stomach screaming for food. Anyone could see she hadn't eaten a proper meal for quite some time, now that her thick fur had left her. Being a scavenger meant she didn't have to hunt but it also meant she didn't get the nutrients she needed. To stand was starting to become a chore for her. Her skinny frame would soon visibly start to wither away and she'd find it hard to even search for scraps of meat.

"You should be more aware of your surroundings, young one." there was no notable warmth in Perjury's voice, but she was not overtly threatening in her tone, "Or else, how am I to know that you will not wander past another border and provoke a war? There are others in this valley who are lacking the virtue of patience." The alphess looked the pup up and down. She was certainly thin, and Perjury was not interested in wolves who were only looking for a free ride. More importantly, she seemed unaware of anything to do with Frigid Plague other than that they had food and a warm place to sleep.

"Speaking of virtue, I must ask your alignment. We of the Frigid Plague have evil hearts; we are not fooled by the pretense of "goodness," and as such we are not a charity. If you are of evil alignment you may join us, but you must earn your keep. Your loyalty is to myself, your family of the Frigid Plague, and your allies of the Honovi."

Rosyn listened carefully to the she-wolf, nodding to show agreement and acknowledgement. When she was finished, the pup replied, "I'll make sure not to trespass into another territory! I do have... an evil heart." She felt strange saying that. She knew she didn't like the ways of good wolves and she didn't like to stay neutral; she just had never told anyone her alignment. "Someone told me something before... Something about how being good is just a mask to hide those who are truly corrupt. I can't remember who but I know that I can say that I do not want or need to mask any part of me!" She didn't know if that was really true but she believed that it was at least somewhat true. Some "good" wolves, of course, really believed they were doing good in the world. Others, however, were arrogant liars; she had met some.

"I'll earn my keep! I will! I won't make promises - I don't think they're the best way to show honesty... I'll be loyal, though, to you, Frigid Plague and Honovi!" She didn't know what she'd do to prove her loyalty but, if the wolf welcomed her into the pack, she would find a way. She wasn't one to turn away if she thought a job was beneath her, she didn't ever want to be arrogant like a few wolves she had met. She would do anything for those she was loyal to, probably because of her naivety. She looked up at the wolf standing before her, trying to hide the desperation she held inside.

Perjury tried to hide her surprise; she hadn't been expecting much, but the pup had given an impressive response. Perjury herself was no stranger to the hypocrisy of the "good" wolves of the grasslands."Very well," she said, "I have not given my name. I am the alphess of the Frigid Plague, Perjury. And I have not received your name—but, formalities aside, I think you could be a good fit here." The alphess was glad to see that not every rustling at her border was an intruder with a death wish; her pack was growing every day. Although the Frigid Plague lacked the strong bloodlines that it had in her own puphood, it warmed her heart in its own unique way to see that evil still stirred in isolated corners of the valley, and that those wolves still sought a sense of community with each other.

Rosyn was amazed that the wolf in front of her, Perjury, had agreed to take her in so easily. "Thank you, Perjury! My name is Rosyn!" The pup was delighted to finally be apart of a pack, possibly full of wolves she could come to think of as family. This pack could be full of wolves who thought like her. She wouldn't get her hopes up but she assumed there would be at least one. A future friend, someone to trust maybe? "I'll work hard in this pack! I won't let you down! I'll earn my place here and make sure to become an accepted member, don't worry!" She knew that for many alphas and alphesses, taking in a random pup was a gamble. She wanted to prove herself, not just be handed everything.

[Cascade]

"Very well," the alphess said, "We have a few other pups in the pack whom you might like to meet. Tora is one, perhaps you could find him in the forest. It is a large territory, but we can always find one another with a howl. There are many unoccupied dens that you may choose from—you'll find that the harshest weather doesn't touch us here, but you'll want a bed of soft redwood needles for the winter...we aren't fully immune from the cold. In these warmer months, though, it should suffice to lay by the river when it gets too hot."

Rosyn nodded enthusiastically. "I'll make sure to make a good den and then meet Tora. Thank you for your generosity!" She was about to bound off when she realised she didn't actually know where to go. "Um... Where are the dens?" She asked the alphess sheepishly. "I'm afraid I don't know where everything is yet..." She chuckled nervously, almost silently, out of embarrassment. How could I forget to ask that? I'm making such a bad impression already! The pup shook her head, reprimanding herself for being so airheaded. These are the basics! How am I going to get anywhere like this?

"The dens are to the west," Perjury replied, "The smell of wolves is strongest there, so you should be able to sniff it out once you get close." Perjury had done some spring cleaning of the dens herself; it was a menial chore, but she was the most capable in the pack of completing it quickly. She hadn't even had to dirty her paws. Her sudden appearance aside, Perjury hadn't made her power known to Rosyn—and she was fairly sure the exact mechanism of her arrival had gone unnoticed. It seemed irrelevant to bring it up now, so she let the topic remain in her head. It could potentially be quite the surprise.

"Oh, okay, thanks!" She dipped her head to her new leader before turning in the direction of the dens. She realised that she could take a little detour and meet Tora in the forest prior to actually getting there. What was he like? This was an evil pack, after all. Did he have the same values as her? Maybe he would be aggressive? Of course not, she thought excitedly. We're in the same pack now! Maybe he'll be really nice! We might become friends! Her wishful thinking had gotten her into trouble before; hopefully she'd make it through another encounter safely.
