A taste of the new home (Hunting alone)

The time she took to get to such a place was only a week, and with very few meals in between her travel, Keter was ready to try to hunt on foreign ground. She came upon the hunting grounds after the winter ended, and yet still snow laid in piles that were far from each other, a good sign that soon spring will be in full bloom. Keter enjoyed spring and summer, for it was the only relief from the bitter cold. She stopped, her off white fur showing like a beacon in the new green grass. Keter scanned the area for prey that would be somewhat vunlerable.

.:The hills are splotched with patches of ice, the spaces in between perfect for grazing. A young Elk Cow and her newborn calf stand on the far side of the rise, a gaggle of snow geese meandering about their hooves. Closer to Keter is a male black bear, scavenging on the remains of a two month old moose carcass. on the left side of the meadow is a patch of clover, where five cotton-tailed rabbits roam:.

Keter looked at the cow elk and her calf, thinking, 'Possible danger. But if that cow elk strays from her calf or vice versa...' She then looked at the bear, 'Nope.' Then she looked to the cotton-tailed rabbits, 'Possibly.... but no. I need a challenge.' She finally decided, the cow elk and her calf. Now was just a matter of getting to them without scaring the geese, and waiting long enough for them to separate far enough to chase the calf. Keter began by slinking through the grass and ice, ears flat and tail raised slightly to prevent noise. She tried to get to a spot that had ice in front of the grass to hopefully blend in despite her red markings.

.:As Keter crept forward the wind shifted, Keter being upwind from the Elk, but not from the rabbits. Smelling her, they scampered into their burrows. This movement causes the Cow Elk to look up and survey the area. Keter must be very careful in the next few moments as the Cow is no longer relaxed:.

Keter stopped dead in her tracks when the cow elk lifted her head. She mentally cursed herself and resumed to creep closer, being sure to make her steps light and quiet. She didn't keep eye contact with the elk for no longer than a second to not get the elk to be aware. She then slowed her movements the closer she got to the elk, then she stopped. She let her hackles lower to where she'd be laying down. Then Keter stiffened, her hackles raised yet again. She swayed her hips back and forth quickly and softly, head close to the ground and ears still flattened against her head.

.:The cow elk sees movement from the corner of her eye and she trots off at a brisk pace, the geese take flight loudly before landing again near the rabbit warren. The calf follows his mother. The elk are still close by but the element of surprise is lost:.

Keter let her gaze fall to the ground before she decided to move forward at a slow pace, swerving to her left vaguely to be sure she was upwind of the prey. As long as she could get close enough to pounce when the time was right, she had no problem relaxing for a minute. She stopped at a patch of ice and layed down beside it, taking the time to relax. Of course, she was still watching the cow elk and her calf. She let her body fall closer to the ground and her eyes to gaze behind the elk.

.:The cow elk relaxes and lowers her guard, her baby wandering off to the side, opposite of where Keter is positioned:.

Keter would've went straight for the elk calf after his mother lowered her guard... if it wasn't for the fact that he was opposite of the she wolf. She narrowed her eyes in complete and udder annoyance. Instead, she moved away slightly and a little bit to the side of the cow elk, still trying to keep upwind of the elk. She stopped, and lowered herself again. Her eyes were on the elk calf, while also being wary of the cow elk. She was in a crouching position, ready to spring away and run if the cow elk decided to chase her.

.:The cow elk wasn't totally oblivious and decided not to put up with the stalking wolf any longer. She snorted, raising her head and stared straight at Keter, giving her the evil eye. With a small bray she lifted her front legs and kicked out slightly in warning.
The cow then turned to her baby, guiding her young away:.

Keter watched the cow elk as she eyed her with a glare, which Keter returned. When the elk kicked out slightly with her legs, Keter growled lowly. She had enough time to stalk and calibrate her attacks, and now, she had to strike. Not out of anger, but out of hunger. Her eyes closed as she breathed in, then she opened them and dashed to the elk as quietly as she could while being equally as fast. Very aware of the powerful kicks that a mother elk possessed and how dangerous they could be, she tried to bite at the lower part of the legs.

.:The Doe snorts and dances away from Keter, though the predator manages to slow her down with a small wound to her front leg:.

Keter smirked when she gave the cow elk a would on her leg and she veered away for a small rest before twisting around the cow and hopefully to her young calf. From her angle, she could get hurt but she did have the chance to snag the calf, orif that failed, she could simply land a small blow on the cow elk. Hunger pained Keter but she still went for a running start towards the calf, leaping and letting her forelegs stretch out to grasp him. Her jaws parted and her teeth glinted as her red eyes went wild in adrenaline.

.:Keter is successful in the fact that she has pounced on the calf, frightening the poor creature and pinning it down. However, as the calf struggles, the mother rears back to smash her forelegs down on the wolf, this could be deadly if not avoided:.

Keter succeeded in getting the calf, but she could see the cow elk rearing. She snarled, and tried to rake her claws across the calf before trying to leap out from the cow. She dashed as quickly as she could, remembering how deadly the hooves of any hoofed creature could be. Keter's teeth bared, she attempted to swing around and bite at the cow elk from behind. Of course, she could always miss and get heavily injured, even maimed by the cow elk, but that didn't stop her. She took a running leap at the cow elk, forelegs again stretched to grasp the elk.
