Thanatos was crouched in the bushes, with his good eye focused on a small doe. He had been studying it for quite some time now, trying to formulate an attack plan. It was the biggest thing he had hunted so far, as he was more so built for speed as opposed to brawn. The clouds had moved in already, getting darker by the hour, and the smell of rain hung in the air over his nostrils like a damp washcloth. The breeze was oily and slick as it grazed his whiskers. He was upwind. Excellent. The doe had been grazing about on small shoots and grasses that sprouted from the forest floor. Somewhere to the west, some leaves rustled. The doe stopped chewing and lifted its head, ears pricked, but not looking in his direction. Something else had caught it's attention. Now was his chance.
Big claws dug into the earth, as Thanatos shot out of the brush like a rocket, fueled by the growling in his stomach. The doe froze for only a moment before taking off into the trees. His tongue lolled out of his mouth as the young wolf sprinted through the greenery like a grey blur. The doe was managing to keep some distance, and his chest burned from the chase. His large paws deftly carried him through the rapid changes in direction. He was gaining yards quickly, it was only a matter of time before he could sink his teeth into the yielding flank of his prey. His eye focused in on the growing silhouette of the deer. With a huge burst, Thanatos leapt forward, paws outstretched as far as they could reach. His maw opened, exposing glistening canines dripping with saliva. Closing in, closer, closer. And then the deer banked a hard right.
A hard right? Thanatos was quite the acrobat, but he couldn't contest physics. As he fought hard to put on the brakes, his legs slid out from under him and he went tumbling forward. He rolled through the bushes, twigs snapping and burrs snagging in his long winter coat as his momentum cost him the meal that was galloping away triumphantly. He struggled to untangle himself, and finally crash landed on his back with his hind paws still caught in the roots- right at the feet of a stranger.
