Seasons had passed for Fade, watching as leaves fell and her pups grew. She sniffed the air eagerly, hoping to find a trace of her wayward daughter. She'd given her daughter two seasons to calm down, then attempted to find her. Poppy had hidden her track well, the rain washing away all scents and the pawprints and bedding sites being nonexistent. But now... now she had a fresh scent. Walking by the large tree that they'd passed to come to the territory, the scent grew stronger. Following the trail, Fade could pick out the unmistakable, fresh scent of her daughter in a vacant hollow in the grass. Poppy soon arrived to the area, a fresh rabbit in her jaws. Dropping her catch, she attempted to take a bite before she stiffened. "What do you want?"
Fade came out of her vantage point, sitting next to her daughter. "I wish to talk, now that we have both calmed down."
"Really, mother? You come here now when I've made a home for myself? It's been many seasons, mother. Seasons. If you'd wished to talk, you would've come before then."
"I wished to give us a chance to calm down. After that, I was busy searching for you."
Poppy scoffed. "For me? Am I really to believe that you'd take time out of your 'Happy Families' charade to visit some wolf who saw your desperation?"
"What are you talking about? I was not making a charade. I was attempting to start anew."
"What you forget, mother," Poppy growled, eyes flashing, "is that you were broken by the war. You lost your eye, Father lost his forepaw, I lost my littermates!"
"We must move on. If I let every loss when I was a healer get to me, do you think I'd be here? Do you think I'd be happy? Is that what you want? To remain stuck in the past?"
"Fine." Poppy stood up, baring her teeth. "You go back to your cozy den, with your mate, and pretend that we weren't refugees, that we never got scars, that you didn't have to have a new litter of pups and then adopt a daughter just to REPLACE us!"
Fade stopped. Was this why she'd run? Did she really believe that Leaf and Kohani and Misty were to replace her?
"Oh, Poppy."
"Well? Answer me!"
"Leaf and Kohani were never to replace Lillia and Stone. And Misty is an adoptive granddaughter, not a daughter."
"Well, why did you have them?" Poppy asked, tone now curious.
"We felt that we were ready to try again. We wanted a larger family. Misty was adopted in because she was Lillia's surrogate daughter, I'll admit, but now we love her for her."
Poppy relaxed. "So...so I wasn't replaced?"
"You never were." Fade came closer to Poppy, and Poppy didn't move away.
"I guess I owe everyone an apology."
"Apologies are easier when you've admitted that you're wrong. Now come on. Everyone will be happy to see you."
Side-by-side again, Fade and Poppy walked home, with Poppy giving one last glance to the forest that had sheltered her.
