Kanga;
Kanga could tell that his shfit in attitude had Kailypso racing to catch up. What had been a murderous, dangerous, wild animal moments before was now, again, just Kanga. He met her eyes and smiled good humoredly. He was different than Manaaki in that way (among many others). Manaaki was more level, approaching things with a thought-out response. Kanga was all heart. Flitting from one to the next, he felt things strongly and suddenly; however, everything he felt was intertwined with a sense of good humor, and he liked to think that it helped keep him along the same general path. Even if there was no humor in the moment, he found a way to lighten the mood again soon after (or at least try and fail miserably, which sometimes met his purpose anyway).
Kailypso wasn't having his little reassurances, either. He hadn't thought she would. She also said to hang her speech—oh but it had been so well-thought out and passion-fueled. Kanga felt another joke rise to the tip of his tongue but he bit it back and didn't inturrupt. When Kaily said that 'no one else deserves it' though, Kanga lifted an eyebrow, all memories of jokes forgotten. No one else deserves what? Was there something deeper, there? Well, of course there was. He already knew that. Besides, a wolf's eyes don't darken like that if there's naught but clouds and fluff in their head. She really wore her emotions on her face, Kanga soon realized. Not when she was concious of it; on the contrary, her humorless smiles and half-concealed snarls did well to mask her face—but it was when she was caught off guard or deep in thought that he really saw her. There was a deep history there, and he had a feeling it wasn't all flowers and rainbows. But he wasn't one to pry if he actually respected somebody...
"'A rose by any other name',"
Her words inturupted his thoughts, though he didn't know what they meant. It seemed to have some hold with her, though, because she got all thoughtful-looking again. Then though, her expression froze when she looked at him. He realized that his own expression was revealing the inner workings of his mind, this time. She voiced his name, sounding unsure for the first time that he had heard. With some effort he lifted his head and met her eyes, hitching another smile to his jaws.
"That's my name, alright. Just Kanga, remember?" He flicked his gaze to the tree canopy above, twitching his nose as a snowflake fell onto it. "What did you mean about roses? A rose by any other name? What does that mean—a rose is still a rose, no matter what you call it?" This didn't make him feel very good. He could easily take that and apply it to himself. A curse was a curse was a curse. He was careful to keep his face composed, but inside his mind was reeling. He worked so hard to fight against the darkness in his mind planted there by his father. Humor was a defense mechanism for him, sure, but it was also a habit. He enjoyed it. He was a humorous wolf. Being goofy was like a second nature to him—second only to the dark and brooding animal that lay just below the surface.

Kailypso:
An automatic smile was pulled into place as he recognized the uncertainty in her eyes and his hazel ones cleared. "That's my name, alright. Just Kanga, remember?" He glanced skyward as a snowflake fell on his nose and he was back again, the big, overgrown terror of a pup, grinning and light-hearted and- no, not lighthearted. The smile had always seemed so natural: now she was sure she'd seen the pause and how he'd had to put some effort into pulling it on. He was still thinking. Still processing the encounter. "What did you mean about roses?"
What had she meant? It took some thinking on how to explain the story without going too far and too deep into her history. "Just something my folks used to tell me. Yeah, I think it's something like that: we could call a rose a briar or a pussywillow and it would still be a rose. I guess...well, it came out without me thinking, but I guess it's like Asrael. Sure, she's an angel of death - in name, deep down she's still just a half-wired spontaneous trouble-maker for anyone who doesn't buy her story. Anyone smart enough to get over her she can't hurt: thank the Power that there aren't too many stupid wolves in the world. Foolish ones, sure, but not too many who are outright stupid." she was feeling calmer now and also eased herself back on her haunches. "Names are fool-things anyway. Pretty I guess, but for pity's sake: some poor wolf just gave birth; was she really able to think through those names very well? Half of them don't match or suit their bearers at all." she raised her chin defiantly, "'Kaily', sounds sweet and cute don't it? Well, I'm not sweet and I'm not cute. I hate to disappoint anybody, but I'm not, so deal with it." she rolled her eyes. "No destiny for me, I choose my own path, set my own course and see where the wind takes me."
Kanga was looking uneasy. He got quiet when he was uneasy didn't he? And then she talked too much, good grief she was talking his ear off. She had to stop now. Something else, "You okay Crooked Smile?" what the-? had she just said that? Power strike her dead where she stood: please don't let him have heard that vulnerable quaver at the end! She wasn't...wasn't what? What was she so nervous about? She and Kanga were...yes, she'd call him a friend. Anyone who'd stuck around this long and had enjoyed it had to be a friend, for reasons beyond her comprehension he had fun teasing the prickly little wolf in front of him, and it wasn't so bad and he didn't tease hard, she'd call him a friend. But Crooked Smile? He was far from smiling now...did he just go pale? The uncertainty came back and she stared back up at Kanga with that honest, innocent concern rolling off her frank face like water from a spring.

Kanga;
Kanga listened to Kailypso's explanation quietly and carefully. She was suggesting that yes, names were names, but it didn't matter what somebody was called, they would still be themselves. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, or something like that. Kanga liked that idea; truly, it sort of shaped all the misgivings about himself he had had as a pup. Kaily really opened up to him, then. She forgot to hitch on the mask of sarcasm and biting wit, and instead actually tried to explain her thought process to the big russet wolf. It was a nicety he hadn't expected. Even her own name, she admitted, sounded all wrong once somebody got to know her.
Kanga felt a lot of the tension that had grown between his shoulders over the past few minutes evaporate. He sighed at length, rolling them one after the other. He wasn't a needy wolf—far from it, really—but sometimes he just needed a reminder that he wasn't as bad as he had been raised to believe. Usually it was Manaaki who did that for him, but he knew the younger twin needed it, so though it was sincere, Kanga often feared Manaaki viewed it as a chore. Often times just being around his older brother was enough to make Kanga believe in the good of the world again, but for once somebody besides him had brought Kanga back.
"You okay, Crooked Smile?"
Kanga's eyebrows lifted mischeviously and he met Kaily's eyes. What was that? A pet name, per chance? Some friendly banter between just that: friends? Her face soon after she had spoken revealed that she was mortified with herself, so Kanga chose not to comment on it outright. He couldn't help it if the deep chuckle that rolled out of him happened to be around the same time that she had spoken. But then, in response to her question, Kanga actually said something.
"Names are a bit of a sore spot with me." She had made him aware of his crooked, rougish smile and now he couldn't ignore it. "But I like that whole rose thing..." He didn't yet know her well enough to disclose any more than that. It wasn't the time for that; and yet, he had shared something real. That was pretty close to fantastic, for Kanga and a new aquaintance.

Kailypso:
He thought about what she'd said and the familiar jocular spark came back into his eyes and he rolled his shoulders like he'd just come back from a long run and was letting the pull and strain of long miles roll off of him, slide off and into the things of Yesterday. Good! She was making some kind of sense, or Kanga was a very good actor. Smiles were not terribly familiar to her, but she figured that his was getting back up to par with the ones before Asrael had butted in, lose and roguish and with that funny 'gimpy' quirk on the one corner. Either he was very good at slow-shaping a smile to make it look more real - which didn't make sense when they usually came so quickly and easily to the giant - or whatever she'd said or whatever Asrael had said (hang her!) to bring in the dark uneasiness he was able to dismiss.
"Crooked Smile". Where in Geist's name had that come from? ...Her hide would have been had if her family knew what sort of vocabulary she used now that she was away from home and back in the Valley, but they weren't there, so she could keep her pelt for now. Well...at any rate the smile was back for real this time. Even his eyebrows rose, tilted in and his nostrils quivered slightly: a sure sign he was about to laugh - laugh at her gosh-dangit! That deep, rumbling chuckle vibrated in his chest and throat and rolled through the cold air. She flicked her tail impatiently and looked away momentarily, determined not to dignify his laughing at her with some naive or stupid expression or comment. Yes, she was glad he was laughing: somehow, Kanga not laughing after their unorthodox introduction seemed every kind of wrong, he was made to laugh, to make the earth shake with mirth and poking fun and teasing and easy-going friendliness - the tall, dark, stoic demon with his teeth bared in Asrael's presence - while awesome and terrible and a perfect fit for his size, was not the Kanga she or anyone else knew very well - it couldn't have been: 'A rose by any other name' sort of thing. Roses were sweet and elegant, Kanga was light-hearted and friendly, if not open or too eager to talk about his past, then frank and true to his opinion and not objected to meeting new wolves and letting them see him for who he was. She could respect that.
He got over his little chuckle and replied to her query. She'd almost forgotten she'd said it! Names were a sore-spot with him. Oh...the meaning of his name must not have set well with him - that wasn't hard to figure out. But she wasn't going to pursue the matter, if it was sensitive then she knew to keep her nose out of it. Still, she was mildly curious, what did 'Kanga' mean? Aesthetically it sounded right, 'Kanga', bright, energetic, it slipped easily out of the mouth, it was light and friendly, a perfect match to his personality. Her name was the opposite: aesthetically it sounded all wrong - like she'd just observed: Kaily, it sounded too sweet and good for the feisty wolf that answered to it - as far as the meaning went though...she hated to admit that it matched. Still, Kanga liked the whole 'rose' analogy. "Funny, I hate roses to this day, but I always kinda liked the saying too."

((Is Kaily evil or neutral, and which pack is she in? Also I'm thinking I may bring Manaaki in too before they part ways just to keep it going for a bit longer. Or, as @shiver said, perhaps Tiago?)) Kanga;Kanga watched her closely. She had slipped up with that name she had called him, he was sure of it. If she had downplayed it he may not have even noticed, for she had already called him that once—but this time it had seemed more natural. Like they were old friends and that was what she called him. It had caught her off guard, even frusterated her. Kanga didn't care either way, really, but it made him laugh to think that she had let herself get comfortable around him for even a moment. Well, they had successfully scared Asrael off together, and two animals didn't exactly do stuff like that and come together more distant. Even though they had both been angry at the confusing female for different reasons, they had been united in their mutual dislike of her. And now, as the conversation had continued, in their mutual disreguard for names. "What does Kailypso mean?" Kanga asked. She hadn't seemed oversensitive about her name other than that it didn't fit her, and so he was curious. He smiled again, watching the way her eyes followed the curve of his mouth. He could tell that when he was happy it put her more at ease; and indeed, why not? Happy giants are better than angry giants. He realized though, too late, that such a question may prompt her to ask him about his. He tossed around in his head for a good lie in case that should come to pass. "Not that you have to tell me. I was just curious. Anyway." He looked to the side and cleared his throat.

Tiago had finished his fish long ago, two or three days ago to be precise. He had then begun thinking of the weather, and, being an older wolf decided to get his 'frail bones' out of the chilling wind. In truth Tiago wasn't that old. He was past the peak and prime of his youth, but his dark blue-green and black pelt was not corrupted by grey hairs. Only a peppering of the strands could be seen on his muzzle and brow. The large wolf found himself in the Redwoods, the gargantuan lumber stretching up around him like pantheon pillars. He padded through the wood like he owned the place, not necessarily cocky, but comfortable and familiar. In truth, he had only set paw in these trees once over the year or so he had spent in the valley. The air was chilled but moist, the vast space above his head filled with the hollow ghost of a blizzard. Wind-shot snowflakes sputtered and spiraled down from the odd green canopy to land on the frozen mud and chunks of bark below. Tiago raised his great head and caught one on his tongue: tasteless, cold.
He lowered his head and continued forward, his ears perking up on cue as two voices came whispering through the trees. Tiago, curious as he was, altered his course and veered towards the conversation. While he crept silently foreword he analyzed the voices. One obviously male, deep bass and rich. The other higher, reserved, maybe a little snooty. He recognized that voice. Who did it belong to? Tiago couldn't quite remember, their meeting must've been brief and unimportant. Soon the voices grew louder, Tiago came ever closer.
He saw them, a pair of wolves, similar in color. One was a hulking brute, large even compared to Tiago and his standards. The other was a slight shewolf with a prickly disposition, she seemed more relaxed than when they had met. Oh! Right, he had met her. She had been watching him at Amoux Creek.
He watched them for a small moment before bowing his head and inserting himself into their presence. "Ah, it seems I'm the one lurking around this time. Sorry for intruding your...conversation." His intense golden gaze flicked over the two as he dipped his head in greeting. He gave an understanding smile as he scanned the two. "Now, who is this strapping young lad?" He motioned to Kanga with a jerk of his head and a glint in his eye. "Are you two courting?" His knowing smile widened into a grin, not an intimidating one, but a teasing, fatherly one. He was old enough to be their father after all.
He didn't know where this conversation was going, but surely he could make it turn for his favor. But what was favorable for him at this time? Tiago didn't really know nor mind. Whichever way the shifting wind sailed, he would accompany it.

((Kaily is a neutral and a loner, no pack yet, and I know she comes off as a little bitter and dark, but she's neutral through-and-through ) Kailypso:Oh, he just had to ask didn't he? Truthfully she didn't mind sharing this bit about herself: as much as she hated the way her name sounded and the cute little pat-the-kid-on-the-head-nick-names that could be made of it, the meaning was appropriate and another half-amused smirk tugged at the corner of her mouth. Kanga immediately deferred, looked away and cleared his throat, assuring her she didn't have to share if she didn't want to: probably in the event she felt the same way he did about her name. Well, in a sense: she didn't like how it sounded, but the meaning she had to admit was appropriate and even she could see the beautiful irony of it all. "Nah, I don't mind. Kailypso means-"That prickly, crawling feeling that you got when you just knew you were being watched crawled up her spine and her ruff rose, she turned and the gingery mane along her neck flared out again and a growl rose and hummed low in her throat as she spotted the intruder. Great Geist, not him again! What was it with getting interrupted in the Redwoods? Couldn't a body take a walk in silence and solitude away out here in this blamed giant forest?! Couldn't they?! And should some poor wolf get dragged into a conversation: couldn't other wolves be respectful and stay well-enough away and not try killing them mid-sentence and not be lurking!? No. No, apparently not. The murky blue-green male from the river was back. She'd thought he'd headed off in the other direction for pity's sake. First he took her surveillance-stance for potential hunting opportunities and declared that she'd been spying on him, then gave her a dressing down on the virtues of mocking fish and now he was here. Gosh dangit! Things just weren't going her way today! The brute grinned smugly and looked directly at her for a moment. "Ah, it seems I'm the one lurking around this time. Sorry for intruding your...conversation." Good grief...was he obsessed with that word? Couldn't he have passed them by? No, of course he couldn't have, he had to come back and haunt her. Her ears twitched back and her lip raised in warning, giving him a warning look at her teeth. Chances were the arrogant old beast would smile and come up with some cute little pat-the-kid-on-the-head chiding for her being rude and bearing her teeth before introducing herself. Well, he could go ahead and do that, she didn't care- "Now, who is this strapping young lad? Are you two courting?"...Oh! Someone was going down! Teased, taunted and threatened she could stand - she could fight against those; but a stranger, an arrogant old fool coming in, inviting himself to interrupt what had been and had been coming back to be a perfectly good conversation given that she typically despised it, just waltzing in and asking about her relationship status. This arrogant, idiotic, foolish, haughty, half-insane old brute! She'd had it! It was not that she particularly objected being viewed in a relationship, and Kanga was not a bad companion, but his audacity to come in and suppose they were romantically involved and full-out ask about it unabashed and acting as though he had a right to know- she wouldn't have it! He grinned and she lost it. With a growl she lunged at him, spreading her feet wide and stopping a pace or two in front of the dark, murky intruder. She anchored her body low and let her fur ruffle up and her lips pull back to give him a very clear look at her teeth. Her ears lay back on her head, now she wasn't just angry or frustrated, she was irritated and had been mocked on top of it: in short, she was not happy. "What the heck do you think you're doing here?"

Kanga;
Catching him off guard again, Kailypso began to explain the meaning of her name. One big ear flicked, flashing red before his underfur was buried once more under the brown. He had almost dried from the snow by then, so instead of appearing patchy and discoloured, he now had his normal shimmer back. Brown, inescapably deep, dark, rich brown—but when the fur was disturbed in anyway, the red underneath shone forth, not unlike fish scales when they caught the light. She stopped talking, then. And it had been right before she told him, too. What was the matter? He was about to voice his question, when the same feeling Kailypso must have felt tickeld his spine.
All at once Kanga was standing. He positioned himself beside Kaily without even thinking; and indeed, he had moved so quickly that it was almost impressive, especially for such a large animal. He was not beside her protectivly—no, it was more in companionship. If Asrael had come back, he wanted the fight to be fair (fair in this case meaning he wouldn't kill her right away, just in case Kaily wanted to get a hit or two in). He did not get as agressive as quickly as Kailypso (as had already been observed when they met, Kanga didn't really have a need to showboat), but he was alert. If one was paying attention, they may have noticed that he was holding his weight on the balls of his paws, ready to sprint in any direction.
But then a male showed his head—not Asrael. He apologized for inturrupting, and Kanga had been about to pass it off as no big deal, when Kaily got all fluffy again. Again? Kanga looked to the stranger. What now?
"Are you two courting?"
Kanga's face split into a wide grin and laughed heartily. He hadn't even considered that—but now that he thought about it, he supposed that it could have very well appeared like that to an outsider. He shook his head good-naturedly, his shoulders shaking with surpressed laughter. Suddenly though, again (though he was becoming less and less surprised by it), Kailypso got even more agressive and leapt forward to confront the male. She had seemed annoyed when he showed up, but that last sentence really seemed to push her over the edge. Why? Kanga thought it was funny. Even funnier: the thought of what Manaaki would do if he had been here. That thought in itself was enough to make Kanga chuckle anew, but the sound was drowned by Kaily demanding to know why the older wolf was there.
"Maybe he's just out for a walk. Perhaps him inturupting our courting was an honest mistake." He was barely able to hold his voice steady to get the full sentence out. "Dear." That was it. If he didn't laugh now, something inside of him was going to pop.

Tiago watched their reactions with interest. The already prickly patterned shewolf turned her head, a fiery annoyance in her eyes. She was fluffed up like a furry cactus. Perhaps a hedgehog would be a more apt description. The male seeed surprised, perhaps a little disappointing that they had been interrupted. With his next words the wolves changed. The male seemed amused and slightly pleased, perhaps he really was planning on courting her. The female seemed enraged and lunged at him her small body agile and quick. She halted in front of him, a fearsome snarl emanated from her body. Her form seemed to shake with anger. Was his appearance really that unwelcome. Normal wolves who dint want him around would give him an annoyed growl and ask him to leave or removed themselves. This shewolf was simply asking for trouble with every muscle she twitched. He would be a fool to dismiss a furious wolf, any wolf no matter their stature could be dangerous if they put their mind to it. He refrained from giving her a good swat for three reasons. Number one, he wasn't in the mood to fight. Two, that male was a force to be reckoned with. Every bone on him was thickly wreathed in muscle, every twitch of his ears, every glance of his eyes screamed of the capability and instinct this wolf held inside him. And lastly, he didn't want them to hate him.
No wolf should ever forget that Tiago was evil. No matter what charm he displays or jokes he cracks means that he is good. He is friendly, talkative, protective. He is all those things, but he is not good. Not even close. He is a lover of chaos, a servant of Geist, a warrior of all wars. He was violence and cruelty embodied. But he was also fraternity and agency. He was many things indeed. And right now he was curious and friendly.
"Yes, you are quite right. I meant no harm in coming here," The large male respectfully dipped his head at the shewolf before walking nonchalantly away from her and toward the reddish brown male, dismissing her aggression, but keeping a wary eye on her. She was still dangerous. Tonight Tiago was not planning on losing his life. "I just thought i'd escape from the harsh winter winds and enjoy the eternal greenery. You?" He shot her question back at her with a good-natured chuckle

Kailypso:
She could hear Kanga chuckling behind her as she glowered daggers into the other male's awful yellow eyes. They were shallow, scheming things, far too analytical and supposing for his own good. This arrogant beast who supposed he knew everything and what he didn't know he wouldn't rest until he did. She'd left home to escape shadows like him, always looking over her shoulder for her. She was done with this! She wanted him to leave!
Kanga cut in before she did - "Maybe he's just out for a walk. Perhaps him interrupting our courting was an honest mistake. ...Dear." She felt her ruff slowly begin to deflate against her will and trusting Kanga to keep an eye on the intruder, turned and gave him the most reproachful, most disappointed look she'd perhaps ever given anyone in her life. The clenched jaw loosened and lost the forward stubbornness that everyone called pride and the eyes fell from wild and dangerous to suddenly innocently calm and confused with just a twinge of hurt. Kanga was mocking her now? She knew he teased, this entire encounter had been him teasing her and her parrying the shots and striking him with her sharp wit and tongue back, but somehow this felt different. Kanga didn't know, he didn't read others as aggressively as she did, he didn't realize this one was mocking her and he didn't know they'd encountered before and he'd mocked her then, but somehow his going on with the stranger's assumptions and turning it all into a joke hurt: just a little bit. She wouldn't let it hurt too much, she would be two that summer for pity's sake, that was too big to cry or fuss like an injured puppy, but somehow she felt her trust in this gentle, friendly giant had been betrayed to a degree. His lip was still twitching as he bit to keep one of his hearty guffaws in and spare the locals in the vicinity an earthquake with the vibrations, but she couldn't see what was funny about this. She didn't know how to react exactly: for what felt like a long time she could only stare at him over her shoulder and just...wonder.
The brute immediately agreed with Kanga's assessment and gave her a blessed distraction from her disappointment as he began moving and she whipped her head back around to watch him. He respectfully dipped his head low and approached Kanga as one would a friend - an ally - someone on their side. Brilliant, he had agreed with him hadn't he? And this brute knew it - now, whether or not he knew Kanga had been teasing by it she didn't know, but it didn't matter because he'd found an ally. Gosh dangit Kanga! What did wolves do with you? He chuckled and answered quite mildly that he'd just been trying to escape from the cold weather and then shot her question back at her. Her ruff prickled again, but didn't flare as it had earlier. "Trying to get away from the likes of you," she snapped, returning his favor of keeping a weary eye on him should he try anything and she stood to her full height - which, again, that wasn't much - and warned him to keep well enough away.

Kanga;
Well that had certainly backfired. The intruding male made a joke, a seemingly harmless joke, and Kanga, being Kanga, had replied in kind. After all, the reason it was so funny was because they hadn't been courting—but Kaily didn't seem to take it well, strictly speaking. The hurt that was reflected in her eyes, in Kanga's mind, in no way properly represented the situation, but that didn't mean it wasn't real for her. He sighed softly to himself and felt his eyes drop to the snow. He hadn't actually meant to insult her.
Curse.
Curse.
Curse.
He gave his big head a quick shake to clear it, then looked into Kaily's eyes once more. It almsot hurt him, seeing those feelings reflected there and knowing that he had been the cause—but then again, he was Kanga, more duck-like than wolf when speaking about letting things slide off his back.
"Oh come on," He hedged with a bit of guilt, batting a bit of snow into a little mound with his great paw. "I didn't mean anything by that." He really hadn't. He hadn't meant to hurt her feelings or make her out to be a fool. It had been a bit of a laugh, that's all. Sometimes, it was true, Kanga did mean his words to bite (and if not bite, sting a bit), for that sort of thing spiced up life—and also because he didn't care much what others thought—but this time he hadn't meant it. He had honestly thought it was a hilarious idea, and was sharing the joke with Kaily. Unfortunatly for him, it seemed the two knew each other already and weren't on the best of terms.
But even with all of that, he was very aware of his boundaries. He was not about to coddle her. He wasn't about to coddle anybody, in fact. If somebody wanted that, they could go to Manaaki. The older twin was always so concerned with how others felt and how they took what Kanga said—it was exhausting. The fact of the matter was that Kanga spoke before he thought, as a rule. Sometimes his impulsive behaviour was even on purpose. It let him feel free, like nothing was weighing him down. He didn't have to think about anybody else in the world, that way. He only ever truly worried about he and his brother, and that was how he liked it. Worrying about how everybody else would react or had reacted to every little thing he said would be the death of him—not to mention a rather grim topic of thought, no doubt. No. If somebody wanted that, Manaaki was the twin for them.
The stranger had mentioned something about greenery and it brought Kanga out of his thoughts with a snap. He raised his eyebrows and looked side to side comically, a grin forming on his lips. Snow, as far as the eye could see. Granted, the snow was thinning and Spring was undoubtedly on the way, but it wasn't what he would call green. "Yea, look at it all..." He cleared his throat pointedly, sparing one glance to Kailypso.

Tiago watched with slight amusement as the shewolf reacted. Her puffed up, prideful, snapping form wilted. You could see it. Every fiber of her groaned and twisted as overwhelming disappointment and smidgen of hurt weaseled its way out of her eyes. Her flattened, very nearly cowered. It was actually quite shocking to see such a guarded and confident shewolf drop her defenses and look so utterly tired at this moment. But as quickly as the sky had cleared, the heavy clouds returned, bristling with thunder, threatening to break and release a monsoon. The large male watched as her hurt and disdain affected the male. This large brute seemed to feel sorry for hurting her in this invisible transaction. But his gaze were stubborn. They must not have known each other for long. Either that or they had, but so little trust was built between the two that any that had been created could be washed away in a single moment.
This was what interested Tiago, the relationships between wolves. The feelings and miscommunication that hurt them. Hurt. That was his end goal. However, why couldn't one have fun every once in a while. Fun like leading astray a righteous soldier. Fun like tearing part hearts. Tiago was way past the point to be the debonair marauder. No, the older shewolves that would be interested in him were much too hardened for him to work on, and besides he didn't know if he had any more romance left in him. But meddling was certainly something he had energy for. And something in this male stood out to him. He was a lost soul, feet tied down to the earth, but head swaying this way and that up in the clouds.
Guards were back up, tension was stretched between the three of them in a twisting vortex, pulling and tugging at their wills, urging them to take the release and just snap. Snap into chaos. Chaos, after all, was freedom, blown by the winds and pulled by the current. "The likes of me? I might get offended if you keep up that talk." Tiago was about to add a childish nickname but refrained, he wasn't here to sneer and make fun of a wolf. Trivial matters like that didn't matter to him. "You only met me while I was fishing," The green and black male let out a hearty laugh, turning towards the male. "She probably hasn't told you about our fishing trip! I had been hunting this ol' snapper for two seasons and I was determined to catch him..." The older wolf went into a lengthy rendition of how he had stalked the section of river where the fish lurked and had used the holes stags made to his advantage. He finished at the point where he had vanquished his enemy, barely mentioning that he had seen the shewolf watching him from behind a snowbank.

Kailypso:
Her heart faltered when Kanga noticed her expression and his own fell. His eyes flickered, the grin slipped and the hurt, haunted look in his eyes made her back down. He hadn't meant it, it had all been in fun, he hadn't meant to hurt her. Truly he hadn't...not really. Dangit! Why did she have to take everything so personally? Kanga hadn't been meaning to hurt her, and honestly, what had it done? He was encouraging the annoying old brute, but that was no reason to turn on the giant, he didn't know she couldn't stand him, and it wasn't his fault, no, that was her problem and she was going to have to deal with it, and she was going to. She could be a responsible adult and handle it, honestly, in retrospect she was acting like a spoiled little brat of a pup. Her own ears briefly fell to the sides and her eyes followed his as he glanced down and quietly made his amends. "Oh come on, I didn't mean anything by that." she knew he hadn't, and that was why she felt like such an idiotic little peacock all of a sudden. She could feel the tension in the air, Kanga had already offered a hand of peace - would she? C'mon Kaily, be a good girl and swallow your pride, c'mon, it was Kanga - the great big, silly crooked smile - could she really stay mad at him?
"Ya know I ain't mad," she mumbled back.
...Well, that could have sounded more convincing, but she wasn't in the habit of apologizing. Was there anything else she could say to smooth things over? Nothing came to her. Despite Kanga's admiration for her speech earlier, she wasn't very good with words. She never used her head when she talked, it was always her temper that lead her tongue, as well as everything else. It was her temper that had made her shoot Kanga that dirty look - he hadn't meant it...why had she turned on her friend like that? She had just determined he was a friend when she went and turned on him. It was her own fault if she was that prideful and sensitive. Her ear flicked and she shuffled in the snow a moment or two, "'M sorry," she whispered, she would have preferred if the other male didn't hear it, but honestly, what would it matter if he did? If she was meant to take a lesson in humility today then she'd take it. She didn't want to hurt Kanga, that sad light in his usually cheerful hazel eyes hurt because she knew she was the one who'd put it there and it didn't belong. She may have been prickly on the outside, and maybe she talked too much and didn't think before she acted, but she didn't necessarily want to hurt anyone either.
Kanga drily commented on what a wonderful result the brute's trip had been for him - to enjoy the greenery. Kailypso's eyes flicked up to the bare branches of the redwoods. Oh yes, very green indeed. The brute processed Kailypso's grumble about her object in running to the woods was to get away from the likes of him and he warned that he might get offended if she kept talking like that. She turned and fixed him with another of her pointed, accusing stares. She didn't want to hurt Kanga in such a way again, but she didn't give a wit about whether or not this one was happy, so she let him know: she didn't care.
He continued to protest - they'd only met once while he was fishing - he turned to Kanga with a hearty laugh. She likely hadn't told him about their fishing trip. Their fishing trip? 'Their'?? Oh really, what did he want from her besides to torment her? First he accused her of spying, then suggested she was romantically involved and now he was probably going to say how he'd been trying to teach her the finer points of fishing.
No, he didn't brag up his role as a teacher, but Good Geist he was launching into a fishing story! No, really, a fishing story. She glanced over at Kanga with a look of dismay as he began a lengthy tale and wondered which way to look. She didn't want to look interested because she wasn't, she didn't want to look at Kanga the wrong way again because she'd seen what that had done just now, she finally just looked down at her paws, resisting the urge to roll her eyes until the brute finished his tale.

((Hey guys ^^ My muse has shrivelled up and died, so bear with me on this one))
Kanga;
The first thing Kanga registered was that Kaily began telling him that she wasn't actually mad, obviously having caught onto his feelings of guilt. He frowned to himself though, rather than become reassured. She had sure seemed mad; or at the very least, quite offended. So now she was either lying, or hiding the truth. How different were they, really? He shrugged, brushing it off. She was allowed to feel however she wanted. But then it was her turn to get quiet. She even whispered a pretty heart-felt apology. Kanga's ears flicked. There was no need to feel so guilty on her part, he supposed. He didn't really know what to say though, so he smiled at her reassuringly. Then the older male started talking. He chastised Kailypso, then switched back to whitty banter again and began a long (long), drawn-out account of a fishing adventure.
Adventure was a bit of a rich word for it, but Kanga didn't mind. He was old. Old wolves were allowed to tell stories. He settled into the snow and tried to focus. Presently though, his mind started to wander, as it often ended up doing. Where was Manaaki? Kanga hadn't seen him for a few days, which was rare, and he was just realizing that he actually might miss the stoic twin. He looked beside him as the older male prattled on, noting the empty space beside him. That's where the silver twin would stand, if he were here. His eyes flicked once to Kaily, then back to the elder, and he shifted his weight. He knew he wasn't being extraordinarily interesting at the moment, but the story-teller didn't seem too bothered by that; after all, he built up to quite the impressive climax.

Tiago finished his story with a hearty laugh, slapping his large paw down on the snow. "Ah, that was a good one." With a sigh, he eyed up Kanga. It was time to make his move, this Goliath was wasting himself by being neutral. He could accomplish so much if he just let go of his false code of morals and just acted. The large greenish black male turned away from the female to chat somewhat privately with Kanga. "Kid...you have a lot of potential...though I'm afraid it's being wasted in your current state." He looked up at the gargantuan wolf. "I'm an old wolf, I've seen so many wolves that after awhile you see the same eyes in different wolves. Like you, I've seen those eyes before," The old wolf sighed, his jubilant aura fading away, perhaps making him look more his age, more gaunt and frail. "I don't mean to be assuming, but you look like you've been living in a shadow, something or someone constantly restraining you. I know if a place where wolves leave their cursed labels and leashes behind, to find who they truly are." Tiago looked the young male square in the eye for a long moment before easing himself foreword, "It's time I be off, you'll find these wolves in the Outer Reaches, they're not as bad as others make them out to be. Maybe they can help you." He dipped his head to the red male before smiling at the prickly shewolf. "So long thistle burr." He winked and trotted stiffly off. Perhaps this fellow would realize his potential and become who he was meant to be.

(Sorry for the long wait, I have little muse for this thread. I don't want to hold you two back any longer.)
